Is anyone else running the Youth Program?

I am not a teacher - yet! But one of my dreams are to novel with my own students in a future November. It's not gonna happen anytime soon, because I am only a first-year in teachers' college. I would love to hear about your experiences with students and Nano :)

I am not a teacher, but in the States, I worked with an afterschool program where I tried to guide young students in writing endeavours. This was before Nano's first year. I appaud you for going into the profession.

I did it in reverse. My first NaNo year I talked my english teacher into the project, then I switched school and on that school during my second NaNo I talked my math teacher into trying... does that count ;)

Mortyfication and I are both teachers from Denmark. But we're physics teachers, so no youth program for us.

Heh. Back home, I was a physics teacher. Now I teach physics, chemistry, geography and English.

I am very excited. Over a dozen have expressed an interest and about half a dozen of them have positively SHONE with enthusiasm about it. The thing is, I had not expected such levels of excitement!

We are having my sign-up kick off party in the school tomorrow so I will have a better idea about numbers.

That's great!

How did you tell them about NaNo?

I told them in my lessons, they were so excited. I was taken aback by just how enthusiastic they are. You get so used to children being "ligeglad" about their studies, to see them enthusiastic about an extra, difficult project... well, it brings tears to my eyes.

I understand that :D That's also why I was wondering what you did, to get them so excited. Have they got a good start? What about yourself?

The kick off was sooo much fun! I brought fizzy pop and started the wall chart up.

We had a write-in in the library today, lots of writing done. Maybe three of them are writing in English which is very gratifying as their English teacher.

I might be teaching them bad habits, made them a pot of coffee... They had to put so much sugar in to make it palatable. We also had a five minute dance party with "Smells like Teen Spirit"! (I need to bring my speakers next time)

This Sunday, I was travelling and Monday I was sick, I am a bit behind but the kids' faces at my low word counts are...inspiring... in their own way.
