With the start of nano just 9 days away (Note to self: MUST work faster on outline) I would like to survey people's opinions on where to hold a Kick-Off event - a combination of a little socializing, possible refreshments, and a little writing (bring laptops, etc.) where you can get those first 1,000 words down in the company of others.

November 1st is a Sunday (can't change the date, it's carved into the nano rules).

It would be great to see everyone there. So to increase the odds, could everyone let me know if you would prefer...

1. Downtown or Township venue.

2. Afternoon or evening.

3. Pub, cafe, or other venue.
(Possible choices off the top of my head include the meeting room at Chapters, Brew pub, Sipps, Starbucks, Sleepless Goat, a different cafe, library, public park with long extension cord, classroom at Queen's - which we would need a student to book - etc.)

4. If anyone would like to come but wants to avoid certain venues (ie you're underage and don't want to go to a bar or you just can't stand certain places) you can let me know privately by nanomail.

5. Any other considerations, let me know.

I'll ask again at the Intro.

Ooooh, sounds fun. And a Sunday! Convenient! :)

I'm okay with just about any venue so long as there's an outlet for my computer's power cord, bathrooms, and food. :P I think I'd like going to Chapters, but that's just 'cause I've been living in Kingston for nearly 2 months and have yet to venture forth and explore it. x_x

-smacks self- I'm a terrible, terrible person. I've been to the Indigo, though. If that redeems me at all.

So yeah, I'm pretty open to it. Oh, and I'm 19 (although no one ever believes me >.>), so if we do settle on a pub/bar, etc., it won't be a problem.

P.S. Yeah, I need to get moving on the outline too. >.<

Downtown works best for me. I enjoyed the meetings at the brew pub in 2007, although if we have more people this year it might not be ideal.

1. Downtown
2. Afternoon please!
3. Cafe would be ideal. However, I am a student at Queen's so I can try to book a room in a library if that's what everyone would like :)

I'd feel really bad for missing both events (and possibly lose some motivation as well!), but would there be a chance that you guys will still be there after 5 PM on Sunday?

thanks :)

I could meet Sunday evening.

Quite new to forums in general. An first time for NaNo.

I would also like to join the Kick-Off-Party. Unfortunately I have missed the first party. Where does the Kick-Off-Party takes place?

Best wishes,
Thomas

Eep, I can't believe no one's answered you. We're such terrible people.

We've decided to meet at the CoffeenCo on Princess and King Street, around 4 o'clock until they decide to throw us out. :)

Sorry I didn't get the chance to tell you this sooner! Hope to see you there!

Boo on feeling terribly sick -_- Sadly, I probably won't be coming to the meeting tomorrow so that I don't cough all over everyone. I'd mentioned bringing an extension cord with multiple plugs, so you guys unfortunately won't have that either. Boo! Well, at least I can abuse hot chocolate and herbal tea here at home - I'll be thinking of you all! =3

I've got H1N1.

So, you know... I think I won't choose, this time, to share my disease with all of you.

Maybe next party?

I'm starting to think we should have a Sickies-Party! We'll all get together wearing bio-hazardous suits and wrapped in blankets =D

I got a last minute call from work and an essay to finish so I don't think I'll be able to come to the kick-off. I'll try if you guys are still there at 7 though!

Hi, was great to be there today with people going through the same struggle.
It is my first time I am writing such a long novel and I feel like my inner editor is eating me. Just got my first 1000 words and sometimes I felt like I was writing complete bullshit. Tried different sentences several times. Horrible, but I try to stay with it. Hope that it works, because there are also two academic papers that I will have to write this month.

Hope to see you again.

Thomas

PS: Is someone else writing is novel in German?

Don't think of it as a struggle! A lot of the people who do this because they would like to be professional authors at some point see this as a struggle, and it puts more pressure on you, and that's bound to stress you out.

My friends and I (two in Kemptville, outside Ottawa, one back home in a town so small I won't name it since you won't know it, and one in Australia) are doing this as a bit of fun competition between each other (the Aussies have a fifteen hour lead on us, so it keeps things interesting, I'll tell you that much), and for the sake of seeing if we can actually pull it off. You know what? The majority of us have already surpassed 4K.

Lighten up about it a bit, try not to stress over it, and let it happen. Sure, there are still going to be the difficult parts, but honestly, why are we doing this? For the fun of it! As for the academic papers, I know what you mean... O_O My program is intense, I get at least one test a week. This is going to be quite the month. Haha.

Don't worry about the editing. Believe me, I'm thinking of some of the stuff I wrote and cringing. There's a reason December is for editing. ;)

Okay, I'm babbling. If you were wondering, I'm the redhead with the itty bitty notebook. You can call me Lauren, or whatever name helps you remember who I am. Trust me when I say I won't be offended. :D

Good to see people today! Hope you're feeling better, Kathryn!!

Also, no, sorry, I'm not writing in German. There'll probably be some Irish popping in, though, and not all of it appropriate. -ahem-

If you're having a hard time writing, Thomas (or anyone), try this. Kathryn and Elysia mentioned it at our intro meeting, and I'd already heard of it myself. It's a great way to give yourself a kick in the pants where your writing is concerned. Just be careful which setting you choose. ;)

I wish I could write in German! But I've only just started learning it. I can tell you my name, and the time, but those do not a novel make :). I can't even do past or future tense yet!

My ULTIMATE Nanoproject, however, would be to write it all in Latin. I'm...getting there : /

Laz Alinam amat, sed Alina Lazum non amat. : ( Lazus Jackusque amicos magnos sunt.

Umm... yeah.

Clearly, it is bedtime. (tempi somno est.)

Thank you very much for your motivating words.
I had a bad night and today I made a decision you should not make at Nanowrimo I think, but I completly resigned my first 1100 words and started a completly new story in a different genre. Now I feel very comfortable with the plot, although I am bit behind because of that. But I will try to keep up.

Best wishes,
Thomas
