I was looking around for an outlining tool to keep me occupied until November (that was a little less super-over-the-top-involved than the snowflake method, yikes) and ran into a short sweet exercise that actually helped me a whole lot and thought I'd share.
The site is http://hollylisle.com/fm/Workshops/plot-outline1.html (and there are other interesting articles on there) but you have to sign up for the newsletter in order to download the PDF, so it's also in my google docs if that is unappealing:

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may sell or give away this course so long as it remains
in its complete, unaltered form; and format (PDF); so long as you do not misrepresent
its contents; and so long as it is not distributed in any illegal manner or for illegal intent.
I'll leave it up for a week or so. Let me know if it helps :)

I recently found this simple, free software which is great for creating outlines and whatever ideas you want to put in there.

Hope it helps.
