Hi everyone!
I thought we'd get a thread going on where people like to have write-ins. I think Autumn Leaves is a great place (as it's independent and nicely centrally located) but I would be interested in other ideas. I don't know how busy the write-ins will be this year, but I think it'd be nice if we could set up at least two a week - one on the weekend and one during the week.
Thoughts?
Caitlin

Excuse me for being ignorant but what is a write-in?

Basically, we get together with notebooks and laptops for a couple of hours and write together. Sometimes there are things like word wars (see who can write the most in a set time), but sometimes it's just to set aside time to write.
As for me, anything downtown, in Collegetown, on Cornell's campus or the mall area is fine, though I am constrained by the bus times -- Sunday evenings are not good for me. The side of town with the Wal-mart is harder to do.

Pretty much what Becca said above applies to me too - downtown, Collegetown, Cornell Campus, or the pyramid mall area.
I'm also pretty new to Ithaca, so it's likely I won't know where places are, at least at first. One example: could someone explain to me where Autumn Leaves is (and what exactly it is?) please? Any help appreciated :)

I have a car now, so location is less of an issue for me. I like Stella's in Collegetown. The atmosphere of their cafe is really great for writing, and they have lots of tasty drinks and food. You also have to pay for their wireless, so no internet distraction there.
As for other locations, I also like Smart Monkey Cafe on Rt. 13. They have a really roomy upstairs dining area with a nice view. The Ithaca Bakery also has a lot more seating now, and you definitely can't complain about the food. Do you think the library would be willing to support us as well?
In my MLing days I also had people meet up at Borders, Junas (R.I.P.), and The Bookery (which is now Buffalo Street something, I believe.)

Autumn Leaves is on the Commons downtown -- it's a used bookstore with a cafe upstairs. They were very nice to us last year.

I also like Smart Monkey (in fact, I'm posting this from there)--the upstairs is really nice, and I'm finding it conducive to planning out what's going on in my novel.
Did anyone see that library thing that OLL is trying to promote? "Come Write In"? Anyone in this forum have any connections to the library that might get us in there? Of course there is the lack of food problem, but still...?

The Commons is good for me, and I might be able to find my way around Cornell too if you have a write-in there.
I think it would be fun to have a write-in at Wells for people in Cayuga County, who don't actually live in Ithaca. If other people would be interested in that, I could probably talk to the campus involvement person here and get permission to host a write in on campus.

I love Stella's. The Cornell campus would be really convenient for me too; lounges on West Campus are everywhere, and quite comfy.
Not sure where Autumn Leaves or the other places are, but if I can get there easily by bus, it'd be great. :)

Thanks for the good ideas everyone!
I'll stop by the library and see if they'd be willing for us to take over the reading room or something, and I'll check out Smart Monkey and some of the other spots mentioned as well. I think bus access is probably pretty important for most spots. I know we also have people farther afield - if anyone out there wants to set up a write-in someplace out of Ithaca for those folks, please do! I don't know those areas as well. Just let me know about them, so I can add them to our google calendar.
Thanks,
Caitlin

I vote for having some write-ins at Smart Monkey. The upstairs is huge, the food is great, and outlets are plentiful!

I'm pretty mobile, so place doesn't really matter (although I don't know Collegetown or Cornell *at all*), but timing is hard because I work evenings during the week. I'll try to attend this Sunday's at Autumn Leaves, sounds fun.

Anything on the commons during the week is great for me, being that I can just walk there after school let's out. I believe I can walk to smart monkey too, if weather and parents permit of course.
