Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't chimed in and said hello yet. My name's Adam and this will by my first year giving NaNo a shot.

I'm curious how some of the veterans around here prepared for their novels. Did anyone go for the pre-prepared outline approach or has spontaneity been the rule?

I've got a basic plot line lined up, but that's always subject to change. It's just got the basics, like who the character is, what's happening to her, and what'll happen to the others. The rest is all as-it-goes when it comes down to it.

I have been doing NaNo for six years, and to date the most effective course of action I've discovered is the "Figure Out Basically and Loosely What The Plot Is and Run From There" method.

Every time I outline and figure out exactly what I have to do each week to keep on target, I fail miserably because I find the storied write themselves. They kinda take a sub-plot string (that I didn't even know was there mind you) and run with it. And by run with it, imagine a kitten with a ball or yarn. That yarn gets all over the place and you end up with three ends and no clue how they got there! (or how you managed to have three ends and not four, that one confuses me...)

so in short, I let it run away with me attached at the keyboard, it's safest for my insanity.

Hi Adam
This is my fifth year and I've finished every year. I've done it both ways and find that by organizing and having an outline, there is a lot less rewriting. It becomes more about style and polishing than getting the story straight.

Howdy, don't let the insanity of anyone (especially myself) or the lack of spelling or glued to the big ass computer, put ya off of coming out to write-ins, and especially doing Nano. Despite how much some poeple whine, and complain and would rather bash their heads into the crumbling plywood, Nano is fun. Sure you are litterally throwing out any time away from a computer screen away and some likely stay up 24/7 to make the qouta but, really when you get down to it, I feel, it's about being in contact (one way or another) with others of like minded individuals. Just knowing that there are someone you know a little more of then their screen name registers in the subconcious, even if you're by no means fanatical about writing and staying up 24/7 to do it.

How much you put into it is SUCH a personal thing and how you normally write, it's just the usual amount of time is drastically shortened. I would suggest that if you don't normal plan and plot then don't or you may end up wrapping yourself into a brain freeze and stall right out. Then you get to the point in your writing that you stop all together because you're thinking constantly of the end product, of the marketing, if what you're coming up with is worth spending - wasiting time on. (Adverts gaze)

For me, hun, ple-ease write how you like to, how you know how to, and enjoy the writing. Something I have so very lost over the few short years.

I made it to half way the year before last, I believe, and I was/am to judgemental of my own work to the brandspanking other Nano-ers that I was meeting for the first time that I ... well, I froze. I judged even more (surprisingly so) my own stuff, and is why I'm so bloody anal and freaking out about getting - borrowing any sort/aged of lab top just so I can feel productive at the write ins. Believe it or not, I really do know what works for me, and how I roll and I should have to feel like I have to reign in my babbling, my Tanya-neise just because I'm way intimidated by how together other Nano-ers are with their writing, with shite.

Honestly, I'm more looking forwards to meeting people then writing. Granted I've surprisingly gotten more willingly, excited about writing in the past few days I stalk this section of the forums out, and prowl the character/writting prompt journals on LiveJournal. I have to figure out just what breed of cats are which, just which of them are going to be a part of my worlds werefeline community and like wise for the cainines. It's not going to be novel format (at least not yet) nor a actual Journal of the main character, I'm doing it for fun, for the 14yr old girl in me that first escaped into writing to cope with family loss. To find the fun, to share and spreed my silliiness like a plague of hungry zombies.

Plot, world build till your fingers bleed and ya run out of paper in your place. Or just dive in with the skinny plan and a relaxed mindset and feel out the inner muse. It's all personal, like how you like your margine to if you wear matching socks. Do what is natural for you.

Sorry about the long windedness. I'd say you could bite me but I'd enjoy it and hubby would hurt ya. :) *lol*

I was here back in 2006 (I mentioned this in another topic) and I tended to do things on the fly. I only ended up with a short story that was darker than pitch, but it was an enjoyable experience overall.

I hope I can get farther this time. I only really do short stories well.
