Once upon a time, there was a pig. He wasn't like the other pigs in his pigpen; he was shiny and silver, and he had a DREAM. This pig wanted to be a writer. He tried to explain to the other pigs in the pen why he so longed to write, but they just didn't understand. They scoffed at his lack of opposable thumbs and said it was impossible. They asked him why he didn't just want to wallow in the fabulous mud like the rest of them. Obviously, his shiny, silver body would have been dirtied.

The shiny, silver pig was sad. They were right about his lack of thumbs. He thought he would have difficulty typing as well, with his cloven hoofs. His dictation was also punctuated with far too many oinks to be coherent to most transcribers.

He almost gave up on his dream. But then--oh, happy day!--he heard about a group of people who could make his fondest dreams come true. He would spend all his time in the company of writers, inspiring them, and dedicating himself to their goals! He became a member of the KWC Region, and pledged to come to all the write-ins.

But if he couldn't write himself, the NaNoWriPig set himself a more attainable goal. He pledged to raise money for the cause, to help keep these wonderful writers going!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As with most endeavours--especially crazy awesome international writing endeavours!--It takes money to keep NaNoWriMo going. Money to pay the staff and run the servers and send out stickers for all the regional participants... money for everything! And Nano is just a poor little not-for-profit organization. OK, not so little--but they need our help!

Now, we're a region of many students and young people. I understand that many of us are hurting for cash. If you can make a donation via the Nano website (as little as $10), fantastic! But if that's just too difficult for you, for whatever reason, consider donating a different way instead. This year, I'll be bringing our as-yet-unnamed NaNoWriPig (who also happens to be a piggy bank) to the Kickoff and all the write-ins, so you can drop in your change or any small donations you care to make. And at the end, while we sip our celebratory drinks, we'll open up that pig and count the booty! Every penny put through the NaNoWriPig's slot will be sent in to the Office of Letters and Light, to help keep the lights on and the servers running through another Nano season!!

What say you?

OINK!!!!

Meet our NaNoWriPig!
[...]
No, not that one. That's Lucy. She's clearly a cat, not a pig. The other one!

No, he's not a chameleon, he's just very, very shiny. And hungry! HUNGRY FOR BLOOD. I mean, quarters.

Nameless the pig needs a name. Any suggestions?

I did make a donation but will be glad to empty my change in when I can. Great idea, Jo.

Fantastic idea! I'll donate based on the creativity of the back story alone. :-p

Well any time I see animals (particularly barnyard animals) having anything to do with human thoughts and emotions, I think Animal Farm.

Therefore, my vote goes for "Orwell."

Great idea. Don't forget to leave the plastic at home and bring old fashioned cash for drinks!

Orwell for president!

Orwell the NaNoWriPig it is--kickoff goers were in favour! Thanks, skalds93, for a great name. =)

Orwell has eaten quite a bit of change so far! I'm not allowing myself to open him and find out how much--gotta wait 'til the TGIO party!--but he's heavier than ever.

But still hungry! Every penny he eats will be...regurgitated?...at the TGIO party and passed on to the Office of Letter and Light to help keep the Nano machine oiled up for another year of service.
