Brainstorming anyone? I need an item that is two pieces. When the two pieces are apart it does nothing. When they are together, it is useful to the main character and the antagonist, forcing them to work together.

Suggestions?

Would a friendship bracelet be too obvious? You know the kind that little girls give to eachother that's like two halves of a heart?

If that doesn't work, is there any way you could give a little bit more information regarding the plot? Something tells me your MC isn't an eight-year-old girl. :P

Boy... That's a hard one!
I was going to say a BFF necklace before Canukie beat me to the punch haha!

Setting would REALLY help. Is the world magical? Urbane?
A religious object perhaps?
I know plenty of electrical objects that just won't work without the correct component.

My first thought was a wand or scepter - the two parts are the stick part and the top part.

The main character is a girl, probably around 12 or 13. The other person in the scenario, her rival, is a boy of the same age.

The friendship bracelet is a good idea, but wouldn't fit this plot. The wand scepter is a good idea too.

The word they live in is like our world, but I'm toying with the idea of magic. Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

Any other ideas?

Two pieces of a broken figurine, or two pieces of a doll or action figure.
An amulet depicting the sun and the moon.

Things that make sets: sword and shield, a pair of lacquered chopsticks, two similar skeleton keys, etc.

The sun and moon amulet from above reminds me too much of the Disney movie Twitches. Ahh!

It would probably be helpful if we knew how these items are useful when they are together. That's going to completely change what the items are. It could be a blank journal and a magnifying glass that they got when they were little that allows them to find out something/leads to some crazy adventure. Or it could be that they were both adopted and they each have one half of a picture (on the back they each have half of an address). I feel like no one can give you an answer unless you give us more.

The traditional thing was a coin that was broken in half. The idea being that you can identify someone because only the right coin would fit together.

Outside of magic items (which are fairly easy), I would say - a book. Each of them have half of the book -or half of a computer program.

Or, rather, one of them has an electronic device and the other has the program/power source/data source that makes it work - maybe even a password.

How about a medallion - metal, jeweled, that fits together?

A map.
Two pieces needed as a key. - Like, in some puzzle games you need two coins or gems to put into the eye socket of the statue or wall carving in order for the path to open. - Of course this can end up being any two things. Like two swords, or a sword and shield. Stuff like that.
A cog and a lever/crank.
Two cogs.

My two first thoughts? Can opener (mechanical) and scissors. If the two halves are put together it works, if not... Technically even your average pen qualifies - there is the ink cartridge and the tubey part that you use. Jeans and the zipper can be taken apart.... axe head and the wooden bit, shovel face and the wooden handle, even saw blades and their handles are sold as seperate pieces as well as a whole. Microscopes could be taken apart. A Kite can be taken apart, a doorknob, a bedframe, any furniture really.... Whatever you want. everything is made in pieces, everything can be put apart again.

Those are all great ideas, particularly the shovel idea. Thanks everybody. Any others?
