I don't think there are really any rules!

Just 50,000 words in 30 days- whatever you have to write to get that.

I know of a few people that wrote an original work during NaNoWriMo, then changed it a bit so they could post it on their fanficiton.net accounts. So, it doesn't matter, I'm pretty sure.
