Hi, this is my third year doing this, and I feel the need to admit I've still never managed to win. But, though this is my third year doing Nano, it's my first here in Ashland! I was wondering if we could plan any Ashland write-ins? I know I would love to go to a kick-off write-in, and any others planned (Within my busy college schedule, of course).
Any one else interested, and, if so, know of any good places?
That's all this nano-er has to say for now.
Happy writing!

Hi!

I live in Medford, so I'm just a few minutes from anyplace in Ashland,. I'd love to go to a kickoff write-in. I went to a couple last year (my first NaNo, which I was thrilled to win!) and they were lots of fun. I don't really have any good ideas for places, but count me in! :-)

I would love a November 1st Write-In, but I'm going to be out of town for the first few days of NaNo, so my novel will have to begin while I'm on the road back to Ashland. But I'd totally be game for anything else we can plan for later in the month! Keep me posted...

I don't even know what a write-in is at this point but I just found out about this site and I am pumped!

I live in Medford but I'm mobile!

A write-in is a get together of a bunch of us crazies Nano-ers where we generally all write and encourage and spur on everyone's word count.
A kick-off party starts Halloween night, and at Midnight Nov. 1st, everyone starts writing. It's fabulous fun and a great start to to the month!
All the ones I've ever been to have been at all night diners, or cafes (caffeine- all the better to keep writing), but, unfortunately, I don't know Ashland very well so I'm not a great one to suggest good places to do these. Anyone know of a good spot?

I'd be down.
Suggestion: Pita Pit is open "late". The "late" depends on how long they're getting business. Sometimes it's 3 AM, sometimes it's only 11:30 PM. That's a good starting place, I'd say.
Just keep in mind, the Ashland plaza area gets crazy busy on Halloween night. It's gonna be hard to get anywhere in the main downtown area.

Sounds fantastic. Pita Pit sounds good for the late hours although its atmosphere may not be completely desirable due to the bold colors and quirky design (not complaining, just not inspired by it). Unfortunately, I do not have a better suggestion...unless we write earlier in the day... My vote is for a coffee shop of some sort, or a Grilla Bites.

I won’t be able to attend on Halloween. However, I’d be interested in a write-in in Ashland sometime in November. Geppetto’s might be another interesting place to check out . . . they're open until midnight.

I'd love to do a kick-off event, but I'm almost dead certain that with Halloween festivities providing such a conveniently placed distraction, I doubt I'd actually be able to attend. Write-ins, on the other hand, are definitely something I would be interested in.

Hello Wrimos of Ashland! I hail from the Bay Area, but I will be up in your area for Thanksgiving weekend. I'd love to come to a write-in (preferably in the downtown area) while I'm there, and meet some of you Nanoers from the north. Let me know if you have anything planned!

For anyone else at SOU, I'll be in the basement of Diamond making pumpkin pie on saturday night.

Hi everyone! I would love to do some write-ins in November! Evenings and Sundays are usually good for me!

Suggestions for good (and inspiring) indoor locations in Ashland:

Coffee Shops:
Bloomsbury
Noble
Case Coffee
Mix

Bars / late night (places where you wouldn't feel too weird bringing your laptop and doing some work)
Black Sheep
Alex's
Geppettos
Mix
The Oak Tree / Wild Goose (places out by the freeway exit that are open pretty late)

Sadly, there are few places that are open past 1am, and not a single 24-hour location that I can think of. However, for a really cozy afternoon of writing, Ashland has a few wonderful coffee shops to enjoy!

I'm looking forward to getting together to write! Happy Halloween!

Well, it doesn't sound like there are any good places for a kick off party in Ashland (At least not where I can walk to), and everyone tells me that Halloween here is a bad time to do anything but party and get drunk. However, I would still love other write ins. I bet there are some good coffee places downtown, and there's also the Coffee Bean closer SOU. What are good times for people?
Felix.duskglass- Excepting late night coffee house miracles, I would love to Novel with you in the basement of diamond, But, um, how do I get in?

Hi! I am an SOU student also. I live off campus and I am a senior. I have never attempted NaNo before.

Maybe we could do a write-in tomorrow or next weekend? Tomorrow afternoon we could go to one of the cafes mentioned above and meet and do the awkward "are you from the internet?" thing. Or next week. But I won't be able to go next weekend because I am busy.

Case Coffee (which someone mentioned) is across the street from campus.

You would have to have someone come get you. Which might be difficult, since security is so tight for Halloween.

Speaking of write-ins, how do they work? Does every one just sit around and write?

Well, write-ins work however we want them to work, I don't think there is a set of rules anywhere. It's just fun, and chatting and writing. Also, occasionally someone looks up from what they're writing and asks a question like "What are the symptoms of a concussion," "what's the weirdest drink name you can think of," or whatever other kinds of questions pop up during the writing.
Mostly, yeah, people just sit around and write together, occasionally getting into word count contests.
Writing with other people is in some ways a great way to keep on task, and a great way to get distracted (By discussing odd drink names, for instance). It's also nice to have a group, because then in an odd way you are held accountable for your word count.
Perhaps you could private message me your phone number, and I could call you when I wanted to come in?

Also case coffee seems like a good a place as any to write. I'd be down for tomorrow. I'm busy from perhaps four to six, and have homework that I need to get done sometime tomorrow, but I would love to do something.
Earlier or later for a case coffee write in?

I usually do my paper grading on Sundays at Noble coffee in the railroad district of Ashland. I'll be there tomorrow, grading papers and noveling (new verb...)!

If anyone else wants to meet...I'm usually there from about 1pm to 4 or 5pm.

Happy Halloween!! :)

I'm not sure if Case is even going to be open (I googled them, yelp says they aren't open on weekends but I don't know if it's true), so perhaps the established Noble is a better option. 1 o'clock (ish) at Noble. My laptop is red.

Tim & Katy are the owners of Case Coffee. They are awesome and their little cafe is as well. Unfortunately, they are closed on the weekends!

See you at Noble! :)

I am not there, nor will I be there, I think. Something came up. Sorry! But I hope other people go and have fun.

Ahh, looks like I missed it. There isn't really a convenient way for me to get into downtown Ashland aside from walking, but that takes a while... and between Homework and novel-writing, I'm not sure I can spare the time. But if there's something closer that's not during class, I'll come.

Hi Everybody -

Are these Sundays at 1 PM going to be regular? I'm going to be driving from Berkeley all the way to Newport on Sunday the 8th - I'll be getting into Ashland around 1 PM and would LOVE to stop in for a write-in for a couple hours and try to fill my quota.

Any definite plans yet for Sunday the 8th?

I, for one, am pretty much always at Noble on Sundays correcting papers and, in November, writing novels. :)

See you there!

So ... Beccalou says she is always at Noble Coffee in Ashland on Sundays ... but nobody else has said anything?

Meanwhile, it looks like the Medford thread is also planning a gathering at that Barnes & Noble on Medford from 12:-2 - I'm more curious about visiting the Ashland area, but ultimately I'd be more inclined to go to a larger group (it's more motivating).

Other than Beccalou, anybody else planning on Noble Coffee this Sunday?

I’m at Noble right now. It’s at 281 4th Street in Ashland. If anyone wants to come down I’ll be here for another hour or two.

I’d like to go to Barnes and Noble on Sunday. I’ll try to make it there. Does anyone know the address?

Hi Cyrus and Jonathon!

I'll be at Noble (I believe...) on Sunday. I don't think I'll go out to Medford for writing, but would definitely like to meet up with other writers this weekend! Let me know what you're thinking!!

Happy noveling!

I would prefer to stay in Ashland.

It's easier to walk to Noble than to drive to Medford.

So is Noble at one this Sunday a for sure thing? And how long will people be around? I'd love to come, but I've tech call for theatre starting in the morning and going until probably 4, at the earliest.

I guess I'll see some of you guys at Noble on Sunday. I was thinking about getting a study room at the SOU library for Sunday night. I think they're open until 11.

Hi! Noble on Sunday. Let's do it! They close at 4pm, so I'll probably be there around 12 or 1pm.

See you there! :)
