Since there seems to be a good number of SBU-related people in the intro thread (and who knows how many lurkers) doing NaNo this year, I think a separate topic is in order before we hijack the main introductions thread.

So lets start off with a disclaimer: I've won NaNo the past two years, but other than that, I am clueless about write-ins and meet-ups and that sort of stuff. Plus I'm also only a commuter and a freshman, so I definitely do know know everything there is about the campus. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Locations: The Starbucks in the Union may seem like the most attractive place, since caffeine and frantic writing seem to be a match made in heaven, but as pointed out in the intro thread it gets rather loud, plus it can get really insane at times.

There are other places in the Union that may work out (there's the lounge on the first floor, and then some extra places on the second) and while they do get crowded sometimes they aren't as bad as the Starbucks, but as far as I know there aren't many outlets there.

The lounge in the SAC might work out, especially since it has a lot of outlets and some nice couches and chairs, but it also gets crowded at times.

I really don't know of anywhere else though, but if you have any ideas, I'm sure they'd be appreciated. (Discovering new things on campus is always fun!)

Times: I usually have 10:30-12:50 free every day, and most evenings 5-6:30 before I catch 6:47 train. Though when basketball season start, I'll probably be stuck on campus for more time in the evenings until the game starts since I'm in marching band. I probably won't be on campus during the weekends, excluding days I have to do something for band. And if I pass my road test on the 13th, I'll basically be able to stay as late as I want or show up on the weekends, so my schedule shouldn't be that much of a road-block.

Hi! I hope many people reply to this post. I'm curious to see who is lurking about. I am down for meeting, although timing is up in the air as of right now (I'm taking 20+ credits this semester! Hooray for poor decisions!).

A list of places:
-Union Starbucks (I liked your suggestion) or Union Anywhere, really. I <3 The Union.
-Psych Lounge (2nd floor Psy building)
-Humanities Atrium
-Harriman Cafe
-Sac 2nd Floor Lounge
-The Place on the 3rd Floor of the Library that is called the Spanish Language Somethingorother
-The Wang Center (there are tables and chairs everywhere! I just don't know if there are outlets aplenty)
-The Physics Library (although we'd have to be quiet, so proooobably not)

Ok, I hope people reply with preferences. It's so soon, OMG. I am shaking in ant

ticipation :)

Hi--
I'm not a student, but my husband is doing a postdoc at SBU, so, maybe I kind of count...? In any case, I have a good amount of free time during the day on weekdays, and live near campus, so meeting with this group would be pretty convenient for me. I don't have any good suggestions for meetup spots, though. Does Stony Brook have a student activities office? It might be possible to reserve a space through them, if you want something dedicated.

Wang is also a good idea, as it's usually quiet (at least not in the cafeteria) and I know I've seen people with their laptops plugged in, so there is ample outlets available. ...plus I'm addicted to their teas. *drools*

And I think you can reserve individual rooms in the SAC (and I think the Union) though it may be hard to do so for NaNo, since there isn't a specific group or organization that would be doing it.

Hey! I'm cool with meeting, but I'm not sure what times would be best. I've got from 12:00 - 2:00 and anytime after 5:30 Mondays and Wednesdays free, 12:00 - 2:00 and anytime after 3:30 Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays I've got anytime up until 2:00 open. I'm a resident here, so weekends are also good for me.

As for locations, I'd agree with the ones listed above. I'm thinking the Union or Wang would be good, yes. So, anyway, nice meeting you all!

Everybody who is in and around Stony Brook should come :)

I believe that you have to pay if you want to use the meeting rooms in the SAC/Union, which is why it's probably best to just meet in the open non-room spaces or S-bucks. (based on this http://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/forpolicies/usage_fees.shtml ) !

Personally, Thursdays and Fridays are good. Wednesday mornings, and Monday + Wednesday nights after 7 as well.

Hi SBUers,

I live right around the corner from SBU but don't attend the college. If we were to meet at SBU, is there ample parking on the campus for visitors? I did meet a friend who lived in the dorms there once but I'm pretty sure I parked illegally. I'm definitely down for the Starbucks or a quiet bar might work as well. Let me know. I'm free Mondays after 6:00PM - Wednesdays after 8:30PM - Thursday 10:00AM - 10:00PM - Saturdays after 8:00 PM

Thanks,
Derek

Parking at SBU (including behind the Union at the Stadium) is free after 4 pm monday to friday and weekends. Not sure if the parking lot RIGHT next to the door is covered by that policy as it is metered, but the lots labeled "brown zone" should be fine and are still close by. You should be fine based on your hours :)

The Wang center sounds like a good option - I never think of it, but it's such a nice space. Despite being here for 5+ years, I know very little about the main part of campus. They keep us good and quarantined down here in South Campus, even to the point of not giving us power sometimes, like all day yesterday (granted, the power outage wasn't intentional), but I digress.

Back to the Wang Center - do they have a decent WiFi (or AirNet, whatever the campus flavor is) signal there? My schedule should be very flexible, providing I have internet. I'm teaching an online course and need to set online "office" hours, so as long as there's reliable internet or no conflict of times, I can do any time for a write-in.

Wang has a rather good AirNet/GuestNet/WhateverNet signal. It even works from their bathrooms, but I highly doubt that anyone will need to internet from there. (...And how I know that is a really awkward tale that I don't feel like repeating. D: )

I don't know what everyone else's plans and schedules are for Monday, but as it stands I'll probably be in the SAC's Traditions Lounge 8ish-9:30AM, and then somewhere in Wang (or the Union) 10:30-12:50 and then 3:15-6:30PM.

Do any of the SBU-ers want to carpool to the kick off party tomorrow? I have a car (albeit a bit sandy), so I'd be happy to take up to 3 people.

Well, this is a pleasantly surprising number. I've classes during the earlier times that have been mentioned, and life affairs during the later. A pity. I'd have enjoyed meeting peers of mine who were fellow WriMos. Well, count me as another tally for SBU students doing this, anyway.

So, Nano is go! Full speed ahead! Etc. Personally, I don't know how my own schedule will match anybody else's in terms of whether or not there will be epic group write-ins, but if you guys are around campus and see a girl with a candy-apple red macbook typing furiously, that'd be me. Feel free to say hello. I'm obscenely friendly.

Hmm, how do people feel about meeting Thursday night? While the rest of the campus parties we can get our write on :)

I might be able to stay for a bit. I have no scheduled classes after 5:10, but I am still slave to the train schedules. ...Unless I can blackmail someone into picking me up.

But if my schedule does implode on me, I'm just going to mention that if anyone sees a girl wearing an ankh necklace with a ginormous red and black backpack typing like a maniac on a silver MacBook Pro, feel free to yell at me to type faster. ;D

I'm pretty sure Thursday night's good for me. I have class until 6:40, but anytime after that I'm free.

Thursday? I'm done with classes at 3:40, plenty of time. It's possible provided nothing came up I had to do that afternoon. I know it's sort of short notice since this thread doesn't seem to move too fast, but if this works out for everyone it'd be a great improvement over my current trend of writing my novel alone.

Yay! Looks like a nice little group. How about Starbucks at the Union? And if it's too crowded there, I'll post another message on here if we move? I'll be there in the afternoon (definitely after 5:10; not sure if any time before :)...I'll probably be wearing a red vest!

I'm usually in the Union from 5:10 onward, so I'll definitely be there until I have to go catch the train. And I will be wearing a red SBU sweatshirt jacket and black emo-kid glasses. Hope to see ya'll there!

Regrettably, I cannot make it today. Last minute obligations for this afternoon have come up. Hopefully you all manage to make a great amount of progress during this, and my apologies for not being able to attend.

I wish my schedule wasn't so hectic. The only future time I know I could make such a future event would be this Monday, but I don't suppose anyone would want to do one then.

Ok. I am lurker, this is my third year doing Nano writing. I have been an employee at Stony brook for more years then I can count. I would be more then willing to meet up with anyone interested. I can try to flex my time a little this upcoming my week. As for Wireless Wang has one of the best signals on campus. Good places to write (SBS lounges behind the elevators, third floor of SAC across from the meeting lounges, Starbucks is great, tables in North Reading Room, Wang Center tables) are just a few.

I know a few more people might have liked to have this posted earlier last week, so I'm just going to mention that I'll be back at Starbucks again this Thursday. From Noon-ish until 9 (except for 3:50-5:10). It was heaps of fun last time (except for getting back in the rain, eep), hopefully this week will be too! Also if anyone wants to change the location just let me know, I'm not attached to staying at Starbucks..

Also anyone else going to go to the Friday meetup?

edit - will still have my red laptop if anyone new is coming :)

I'll definitely be at the Starbucks Thursday night again (unless, of course, someone wants to change the venue), probably from 7:15 until 9:00 or so. And this time, hopefully it won't rain xD Hope to see some of you there!

I'll probably be there 5:15-6:30ish, since I managed to fail my road test for the seventh time again this morning, so I'm still slave to the train schedule. D:

bumping this thread up so that more folks can see it..

same deal applies this week -- I'll be at SBU Starbucks from 'round noon tomorrow until forever. Hopefully it will rain again. (I say that so that it won't.)
