So what is everybody going to name their MC? I always find it one of the most difficult choices to make, along with the title. hehe. I have no idea atm, but I figured it'd be cool to hear what everyone else has thought of.... :)

Sources I use are the many lists of baby names you can find on the internet. For a period piece, some sites list them by popularity for different time periods. Eg, 'Jennifer' was the most popular baby name in, um, the 1970s, I think. You can get lists for different national origins and religions, too. Google 'baby names' and a qualifer such as 'norwegian' or 'muslim'.
The phone book is good for last names, too.
Finally, check out your selected name with
www.howmanyofme.com
Enter the name, and it will tell you how many persons with that name were listed in the US by the last census.

My MC is Alys at the moment. Pronounced "Alice". Her sister is Amayri (A-marie). Since it's supposed to be loosely based off my family, and my sister and I both have first name's starting with M, I thought my characters should match up that way.
I've had fun going through and renaming family and friends. :)
One problem I've had is thinking up a good name for the evil sorcerer. I ended up nicknaming him "Darkness" and I've decided to leave it at that for now. If you say his real name, he'll hear you, no matter where you are so calling him Darkness is an a way to get around it. (Also he looks like Paul Gross on Eastwick)

Currently my MC's name is Shael but that could change as he is developed. That's what happened with my Villain, I had 2 different names in mind for him, and while interviewing him he decided his own name, Seromian. My Female MC's name is Tixierie. She prefers her full name or simply Tix, God help you if you call her Tixie, however my MC can get away with it since they are together.

Naming characters is usually the easiest part for me because I choose names based on their personalities. This year, I'm writing an Earth based story and it was really hard! Plus everyone has a nickname so it was even more difficult. But the names I did come up with are pretty cool. :D

My MC's name is Mia (pronounced My-ah, not Me-ah, thank you. She's very sensitive about that.) Some names just pop out from the keyboard. Other's get changed as I get to know them. I alternately like to play against type or use names that fit their images. MC is the only with a fanciful name. Because she's different from everyone else she knows.

Well, my MC is Meliak but most non-mircon (read:landdwellers) call her Meli. Since -ak is just a feminine name ending she kind of is named Meli after all.
Her sister is Ashaak "Asha." Other notable names are Queen Reniak, King Amaet, (Queen) Desa Qua, King Marc Luc Rigul, Lateak "Lateu," Teliet "Teli," King Ush Läyi, Mrawryaar "Mra," etc. Then you get into the only slightly off from familiar names like the Spanish derived ones Like Jorge Pelaez and Pabli Marini (that's a bly and a ny sound at the end of those names for those of you keeping score at home) and pseudo-latin ones.
Longest name so far: "Asdrubal Hermenegildi Cebrián Venceslás Fulgenchí Sebastián Oleastri dí Prieti the Third" who my MC calls Cienti (pronounced almost like chench, a cropping of cientifico = scientist) because she can't pronounce any of his names. It's okay, Asdrubal is used to it, it beats being Asaderubal or Asermal.
In case you hadn't noticed, most of the weirder names have nicknames of some sort to make it easier for the casual reader to recognize them. And the other characters to address them.

I have decided on Ariana, Renner (which I will more than likely change, but it's sticking for the moment unfortunately), Emily, Ethan, and Lily. More main characters are trying to pop into this, orz. >.> I tried to stick with pleasant sounding, not too out there names. Not that I don't love them, because I adore them.
