I'm a newb. My friend and I did a LaNoWriMo back in March and wrote novels. Now here we are doing it officially!
Anyhow, I'm curious as to what genres the Lansing writers are into. Has anyone done an informal survey? I write funny chick lit and romance but I'm trying my hand at a more serious piece this year. What do you love to write?

If you read through the roll call message most people gave a stab at what they're going for this time around- at least, enough to get a feel.
Looks like quite a few fantasy/sci-fi, some steampunk, and a bunch of "ahhhhh! I don't know! ahhhhhh!"s.

I finally decided on one! I'm going to do scifi! Aliens! All your cookies are belong to us! (Is that a reference to a movie or a game? I can never remember. . ..). It was just going to be a Nanoer getting sucked into the novel they were writing. . . but the aliens kidnapped my plot.

I still offer my suggestion from last year to anyone: Start writing ANY genre (other than Sci-Fi), but begin where the story is wrapping up in a "happy ending":
"They all smiled at a job well done, got into the Chevy, and drove off into the sunset..."
THEN....
Have the planet explode, and cut to the viewpoint of some aliens who did it just for funsies.
Viola! Instant comedy sci-fi at your fingertips!

I write chick lit/romance, too. And that's what I'm sticking to for my first NaNo. Maybe next year I'll try my hand at that mystery I've always wanted to write!

Druidblue. . . xD You're silly. But the end of that novel would be HILARIOUS.

I'm thinking I'll do fantasy...only they have guns and aircraft an' such. If I don't change my mind in the next two days, that is what I'll be writing. =P

Mine is on the fringes between sci-fi (in that it is based in the future) and YA fiction. I guess it will depend on what actually happens. :) What I write outside of NaNo runs the gamut.

Originally, I was going to do a paranormal romance thing, since that's what I love to read. But my brain was getting bogged down in the details. Then I started talking to my laptop, verbally abusing it for not giving me any good ideas, and it came to me... a chick who talks to inanimate objects! I kept my original time travel idea and simply adapted it for a light-hearted comedic fantasy. xD I'm such a dork.

Urban Fantasy/Parody/Whatever the heck crosses my mind. I'm just getting ready to write the opening scene in which a werewolf is being arrested for public indecency. ^^

Brilliant Druidblue! I think that's a great way to start a story.

I'm doing a chick lit historical/hysterical romance I started in high school algebra class more than 30 years ago. Keeping my fingers crossed that it finally gets written! - despite the difficulty in typing with one's fingers crossed -!

Literary fiction - fictionalizing an incident that happened in my town during the 1930s - LOTS to change! I've had it in mind for over 20 years. Last year I wrote a tween novel about time travel. Fantasy and sci-fi are generally not my thing. I also have a historical romance novel in mind. But this year it's definitely literary fiction - I suppose since it's in the '30s you could say historical literary.......

OMG That's hilarious : D I am returning to the Fantasy world that I was writing last year. Ayree should be pleased that she is getting to tell her story and not try to hijack the plot this year... or so I hope with fingers crossed.

I'd honestly classify what I'm writing as normal literary fiction; however, there are definitely fringes of paranormal activity and obligatory ruminations about the apocalypse. We'll see where it goes.
