I'd like to add some of the southern elements in my story. One downside is that we don't have a zoo, and my MC needs a zoo for one of the main scenes.

Other than that, I think I can add a lot of Savannah. I need an area where a person can do a lot of walking to get to places, and downtown is great for getting around on foot!
I'll need a cemetary and church for a part, also. Again, downtown is great for that.

Tybee is close enough if I need a beach scene. (One never knows where the story will end up.)

I probably won't call the city "Savannah" in my story, but there will definately be areas of the city that will show up in my writing.

If it's not going to be called Savannah, why not just put in a zoo? :)

We do have a small teaching aquarium on Skidaway. Don't know if that would work as a good substitute.

I don't have anything Savannah in any of my writings, but there's still traces of south Florida in a lot of it. That was my original setting, only I've changed it around a lot after realizing I didn't technically need to stick with what's actually there. ;)

Hi,

We have Oatland Island Nature Center, which is on its way to becoming a zoo. As of now they have alligators, cranes, eagles, and I think a couple other birds of prey, turtles, cougars, wolves, bison, armadilloes, farm animals, (goats, a burro, a cow, chickens, geese, pigs), possibly a few others I can't remember right now, and they're planning on getting a bear. You ought to check it, or at least its website, out to see if it will work for you. Your story has already captured my attention simply by being set in Savannah.

None of the story I'll be working on this year is set in Savannah, but I have written some pieces that take place here, and my partner is writing a Savannah novel, (but not doing NaNo).

None of my stories have taken place in Savannah, though it's a possibility that this year's characters may trek through a similar place at some point, so maybe! I'm a city person at heart though, so most of my works tend to revolve around the tristate area, which I always miss when I'm away.

AHA! I forgot all about Oatland Island! (slapping my forhead)

That would work perfectly. I've been there several times and have taken my kids there on a school field trip. :-)

Thanks!!!

I have no idea what or where my novel will be set. I can't use what I've beem working on the past year so I am starting from scratch as of right now. (I need a lot of luck!)

I take my kid to the Jacksonville Zoo once a year, so if that distance isn't too far for your plot it's a real zoo.

Mine is set here - I find it really hard to put a place on paper if I'm not intimately familiar with it. Setting, for me, has always played a big role in anything I enjoy reading and will play a big role in my novel as well.

I originally started this when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale and we made the decision to move here. Although I'd been here many times, I only ever saw what most tourists see and after actually living here for several months, found holes in my plot (that related to setting) big enough to drive a fishing boat through. So I scrapped it and am starting fresh this month.

Nancy - Oatland Island is good. You might also consider the Wildlife Preserve down near the port.

I'm including bits and pieces of Savannah, as well as some places that don't exist. Right now I've got Vinnie's and Moon River thus far, as well as some clubs I created for the story.

I'm actually setting mine on Wilmington Island in a fictional marina. The scenery, will be straight from what I see every single day. Marsh mud, extreme tides, sea birds, dolphin, spartina grass. For me, downtown Savannah's a place you go when you have guests in from out of town or the occasional Saturday afternoon to browse along River Street while consuming beer. I like the peace of the marsh a lot better!

The last novel I wrote took place partially (mostly) in Savannah. I am from New York, so this one is taking place there.

My novel, (actually, it's the second in a series), mainly takes place in NYC.

My novel is originally being based out of Truetlen House for Boys in Ebenzer, GA. From their it's going to move to Savannah, probably Georgetown. I haven't decided beyond that.

If your still looking about the Zoo, Jacksonville does have a Zoo to my knowledge and Atlanta has the Georgia Aquarium. Those are the closest next to Oatland Island.

Hey, Lena, about Truetlen house in Ebenezer.... great idea and great area!! We went on a canoe trip at Ebenezer landing a few years back.

As far as the zoo in my book, I decided on using elements of Riverbanks Zoo, in Columbia, SC. I've been there so many times that I can walk through it 'in my head' and see everything. I needed that kind of familiarity.

and as another poster pointed out (I don't remember everyones names yet)... beings I'm not calling the city "Savannah" in my book, it won't matter that there isn't an actual zoo in Savannah. ;-)

I'm glad to see so many of you including Savannah and surrounding areas. I guess it's just natural to include places that we know and love!

My stories tend to take place in and around NYC because it is my favorite place in the world, though surprisingly, this year, the more I write into this story, the more I'm pretty sure it takes place in an unnamed, but thinly disguised, Austin, TX, another place I'm rather fond of.

Still, since it's (most likely) my last year in Savannah, I kind of want to sneak it in somewhere now... maybe my characters will do some traveling later on. :3

I'm in love with NYC too! I do a lot of 'walking around' Manhattan via google streetview maps. :) The main storyline I'm working on, which will take several books to run through takes place mainly in NYC.

I have written some stories set in Savannah, but they're been mostly just 'for fun.' I do love Savannah though, so maybe someday I'll include her in a story.
