With last year as my only exception to my rule, I always start Nov. 1, as soon as the clock strikes midnight. I type until I can't type no more and get myself a nice headstart on the word count.
When last year I could not start off this way because of a Halloween party it felt really strange and it bothered me for a day or two. So this year, I'm starting at midnight, and then write again in the afternoon or evening, or both...
Have you thought about when you'll start?

Well no, I hadn't thought about this much, and as this is only my second Nano I haven't established a set routine. Interesting question though. I'f I'm awake at midnight I'll definitely get started, and will be thinking of all those with eyes on stalks and keyboard aflame.
However, I'm working tomorrow afternoon/evening and there's every chance I'll be asleep by midnight. But I know I have the house to myself all day Sunday and I plan to make the most of it. I want to sail past 5k and if things go well get close to 10k. I have enough prep done and have been turning this one over in my mind long enough now that such a word count is definitely achieveable.
My work pattern through the month is such that I've effectively got three weeks in which I'll get much writing done and in those 3 weeks I'll be juggling the usual demands of work/life

I'm going to start writing on Sunday morning when I'm rested. If I stay up late, and I'm tired, I'll only write junk.
I made the mistake of telling the gang at work that I'm taking part in NaNoWriMo - now I'm kicking myself that I won't be able to sneak in any writing time at work :(

You can always send yourself some emails and sneak in a paragraph or two.... ;)

Two years ago I 'won' Nanowrimo within 10 days and I hated it. It was literally painful. My hands hurt, my brain hurt, and it wasn't much fun. And.. the month, give or take a few days, or writing I had been looking forward to had been cut short dramatically. I never looked at that novel again, eventhough the story wasn't finished and needed a lot of work. I lost al interested in it.
5 to 10K in one day is a LOT of writing. If you think you can manage without going crosseyed and/or mad, I wish you the best of luck.

I'm going to write on average 1666 words per day, so I'm starting as soon as it turns November 1st and I'll write one chapter, and then probably write a chapter every day. I want to leave myself some time at the end in case it's longer than I expected and I need to write more.

I'm going to aim for a chapter a day, which is about 2000 - 2500 words. If I get the bug on a certain day I'll keep going. I think it's best to have the 1677 words as a daily minamum, but then to write as your inspiration takes you. I'm lucky this year because I saved my work holiday for this month, and my kids aren't with me til the 4th. you have to go it at your own pace and what feels right for you.

Yeah, I've given this subject some thought - I had to as soon as I realised that November 1st fell on a Sunday, because Sunday is my Horribly Early Work Shift day. I have to get up soon after 6am, which means sadly that staying up until midnight the night before is a NO-NO. x3 What I expect I'll do is occupy myself at work when things are slow by planning my first chapter, then after lunch when I'm back home, I'll sit up in bed with my laptop and start writing. :3 I think the rest of the day should be enough to give me a couple of thousand words' start.
As for how much I'll do per day after that, it depends where the muse takes me. (She can be fickle xD) I intend to aim for about 2,000 words per day to make up for days when I might not be able to do as much/any, for whatever reason. If I feel compelled to write more, then brilliant!

I'll be starting at midnight, as I did last year. I found that I did most of my writing between about 8pm and 2am last year. It's just when I like to write.
I like to get a nice head start on 1st and then I aim for 2000+ each day. This allows me to take rest days when I am simply too busy to write or have other commitments. I also aim to finish about 25th, then it's quite relaxing and I can write more if I want :)
There will be an online chat from about 10pm on 31st Oct to whenever on the morning of 1st at http://www.chatzy.com/184439498392 (This is our own private chat room).
Hope to talk to some of you then!

Visited the chat room. Looks fine.
I think I'll be starting with a few hundred words on Saturday night / Sunday morning. I don't know how long I'll be able to write that first night, but I want to get some sort of a start.
