This year I'm doing a science fiction novel. Just wondering if anyone else is, and if we could maybe form a writing buddy group to brainstorm and generally encourage each other as we explore the final frontier. :)

I'm writing a science fiction novel as well. I'm game.

I'm not sure sci-fi is truly the best term for what I'm writing; it's sort of sci-fi in the sense that Firefly is sci-fi, if that makes sense.

I've got quite a few science fiction elements in my novel, but I'm not sure if it'll go full sci-fi on me. I've got an alternate timeline, some comic book science, and maybe superpowers.

Given the plot you've come up with, if you do have superpowers in yours, Gayle, you definitely need to have someone with a crackpot theory that there's a direct relationship between homosexuality and superpowers. And possibly people trying to "become" gay so that they can fly.

I'm aiming for the Mainstream Fiction genre (story driven, compelling characters, etc.), but there are definitely elements of Science Fiction in my novel this year....specifically the one about the Earth becoming wrapped in a time bubble and moving back towards the Big Bang at a highly accelerated rate.

I'm stealing that and pretending like it was my own idea all along. I'm apparently a super villain.
It would be more convincing if I could spell "villain" without the browser's spell check.

Ok. Lotsa 'kinda' answers. I suppose that if you WANT to be in a sci-fi group and such, then, yes, you are writing something sorta sci-fi.
BTW, Firefly TOTALLY counts. It may be the sort of science fiction that kinda, ya know, lacks science. But if your novel has spaceships, alternate dimensions, aliens, mind control, super powers, robots, or anything else that is beyond the realm of possibility, but not technically magic, then you should be in the group. :D
I suppose since I had so few responses I should expand the category to "Science Fiction and Fantasy."
Soooooo........let's hear it. We should start posting what ideas we have, what problems we're having, and see if we can brainstorm. Anyone use AIM or Yahoo? Maybe we can set up a group there. ^_^

My genre asserted itself tonight! I wrote some nice bits explaining how a space shuttle system allowing super-quick transport all over the globe is feasible :3
