My goal is to write the required 50k without dying or killing the friend who persuaded it me it was a good idea. But then, this is my first time doing it, so I feel modest aims are best.
I'm modestly aiming for 50k. But the whole reason I signed up for Nanowrimo this year was to finish this novel idea I'd had for some time, so if that takes more than 50k, then so be it.
The NaNo must be the best way to age 30 years in a few weeks. I entered after being persuaded by a friend off one of the numerous boards. I didn't think I'd get even 20k written. The first few days were difficult to sort out an exact plot and storyline, but it suddenly got easier. Hell, I've done it in 18 days. The problem is now I have so much stuff I will probably double that amount to 100-110k in December.
I might have a day off now. 21 hour days starting at 5:30 am tend to be a bit tiring. Especially when you have to fit in freelance work (for that... substitute - all hours)
So it's now 4:20 am I think I might go and have a celebratory whisky. The sun must be over the yard arm somewhere on the planet :)
Cheers to everyone.

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, just like grandpa. Not screaming and panicking like his passengers.
Congrats Joculator, its a truly wonderful feeling when you sprint over the 50k line. Like yourself my story has a head of steam and continues on a pace!!! It suddenly took another turn this afternoon with several more characters appearing! Where do they come from?

Yes indeed that 50k is certainly a magic number.
Similarly, I have discovered that new characters have appeared. In my case it was because I've suddenly changed the storyline and dragged it forward 500 years to a modern setting which should throw the reader totally off balance and give the plot a totally new dimension in which to expand.
Just when I was looking at finishing the whole thing, I've now set myself up for maybe another 50-60k, maybe even a sequel for Nano '10.
I have found a bit of an advantage in that short sessions do inspire me to write more. I'm not overly fast on the keyboard when having to make up the dialogue as I go, but 6-7 short spells during the day can add around 3-5k to my total.
