Does the word count system count all words?
So lets say I made up words, like a character who spoke in some alien language and all he said ws 'blargy blonk' would those two words count or is it intelligent enough to check for proper words?
And swearing words, do they count? If the protagonist gets pissed off and drops a serious F bomb is that on my word count (made sure the 'o' is in the word count hahahaha) or does it skip swearing.

Suppose my question is general is does the word count count the spaces (so any word counts type thing).

Paul,

Maybe you should just watching your f-bombing language.

I believe the word count software recognizes any character or collection of characters with a space on either side as a word.

Whatever the technique, they won't have anything in place to discriminate against particular words or phrases...

Swearing is completely allowed. No issues there. Of course, you might want to clean it up before you let people read it (some people get really up in arms about that sort of thing), but otherwise (or if you're like me and don't care) then you're golden!

I could be wrong, but I believe most word count software defines a word as 5 characters, regardless of whether they are spaces, letters, numbers, or symbols. If that's the case, you could, technically, mash the keyboard for the next 30 days and end up exceeding your word count many times over. Although, that might not make for a very good novel. :)

EDIT: Sorry, turns out I was wrong. I just checked my word count, and it looks like mine counts a word as anything followed by a space. Not sure if all word count software is the same though... I know I used to have one that was just every 5 characters. Regardless, even a made up language (or swearing) will count :)
