So, we're 8 hours into this thing in the UK, and how are we doing? Who managed to stay up beyond midnight to get a start?
I was in the chatroom with a few others who were impatient to get going. Don't forget - you need to average 1667 words a day (each and every day of the month) in order to succeed with this thing.
I was going to leave it until today, but late last night I thought I'd power up the word processor, and save some files. The ... whoops-a-daisy, it was midnight, so I thought I'd write a first sentence. Well, two. Maybe a paragraph. And the words came. Not good words, and most of the first two pages will get ditched in the edit, so I can start in media res. But they'll do for NaNoWriMo.
I know there were a couple of others with me in chat, getting a head start. Anyone else? What are you planning to write today?
Remember - prevarication is the enemy of NaNo.

I wrote 1414 between midnight and 1am, and found a good place to stop.
----------Will write some more later and aim for 3-5k for day 1.
I like to get a head start in case I fall ill or have other emergencies :)

I made a modest start. I was surprised that I haven't received any of the motivational emails Nano promised me yet.

There was one sent a couple of days ago, I think. Bear in mind the USA is a few hours behind us.
You can see the emails on the NaNo site, I seem to recall.

Yes, I should think there will be an email of some kind today. As I write this it is about 6.30am-9.30am across the US.
There should be about 3 pep talks per week. I have been sending my pep talks out via email, but I think the system is being very slow. I have started a thread with all my emails.

I stayed up until midnight to start : staring like a zombie as the clock counted down then suddenly realising it had ticked over 12:04.
At 2233, the little word counter bar actually looks like it might have moved (a very small amount). Sorry I completely forgot about the chat room in the couple of hours before midnight.

Didn't make it to the chat last night, but did battle tiredness - I'd got up before 7am - to do my first thousand words. Annoyingly, today I've woken up with what might be the first stages of a cold (or swine flu, if I'm being a real hypochondriac) but feeling better now after lunch and the Grand Prix, so about to chain myself back to the computer and aim for 3,000 or so in total by the end of today.

Oh...I started in the morning, because the first is my birthday. But I can't write anything. I suck too much :(

Hi Foggy,
----------Last year I found that if I turned off my computer monitor and just wrote that I produced a lot!
It did make the editing process more fun, but it meant that I didn't go back and correct every spelling mistake, and I was never tempted to re-read or make changes :D

I have a problem with turning my monitor off. My space bar is a bit sticky so if I don't keep an eye on it instead of 100 words I find I've written one very long one - not good for the word count!
My only tip is just to keep writing - ANYTHING! I sometimes think of a song and base a page or two on the storyline of the song, but using my characters - it's usually totally out of context with the rest of the story, but it keeps me going until inspiration hits again.

Didn't get anything done yesterday because of being too busy with other stuff, but back on target today and have just passed 5,000. I find the best way to keep myself going is to be very willing to digress when I'm not quite sure how to push it forward - it's fun to explore character's backgrounds in depth, and it also helps me explore the setting and background a lot, which will help when I come to write this out again 'properly'.

I reached just over 7000 yesterday and the last 3500 was absolute torture. I hate my main character so much I wanted to kill her off as well as the main victim (it was a whodunnit). So i couldn't stand the thought of another 25 days torture and I started another story, which amazingly has taken right off and I've already written 4000 words of it in one afternoon. And I know exactly where I'm going with it.
My question is - can I count the original 3500 words of the other story towards my total, or is that cheating and do I have to start counting again?
