I had a conversation at our kick-off about a regional word war. In October I reached out to Melbourne Australia as they have about the same number of participants we do but I never heard back. So last night, after someone asked if we were doing this, I emailed two regions with around 550 members which is what we have.

I heard back from the New York: Albany region. Their ML is agreeable and is going to speak to the participants at their kick-off today. Their idea was a one day word count war - our regions would agree on a date and whoever posted the most words on that date would win. I was thinking of a month-long competition for most total words, but either would work for me.

Word wars are fun because you get to visit other regions forums, post a little smack talk on their boards, read what they've written on ours, and possibly have a little extra impetus for your own writing.

I also emailed another region late last night but have yet to hear back. I will keep you all posted.

OK, time for me to do some writing of my own. I didn't get up early just to update the forums!!

Albany NY has accepted our challenge!! Here are the details: we'll have a one day word count challenge (single day total) on the 15th and then an overall total word count regional to region at the end of November.

Limber up those fingers for the 15th!!

Here's the link if you wanna visit them and talk a little smack before the 15th!

Hi, Riverside! I'm here from Albany to encourage you guys to give us some competition. So far we are SERIOUSLY beating you. C'mon, you can't let both us AND our football team beat you! :)

We have teleporting humans, crazed shovel-wielding villians and runaway children sneaking on space ships over here. We eagerly await news of what your imaginations will throw at us.

Hi Riverside! Greetings from New York's Capital District!

I want to encourage you too! I'm not going to root against the Chargers since I have a friend in S.D. who's a fan, but I know my Albany wrimos are itching for a challenge and want to hear from you!

Let's make this Nano the most exciting and winner-filled one yet!

This ought to be fun!

One thing I noticed though, our daily words as a region is updated a few hours before midnight. If you are using that as a tally it would be best to know exactly when the update happens. I do most of my writing 8pm to midnight so my words from the night before will end up being the ones that count on the 15th, right?

No idea. I've never done a one day competition and not sure how it will really work. I guess we'll find out. And please know that things will change and smooth out as we get further into NaNo.

All I know is I do not plan to stay up til midnight to check the numbers...

Albany here... just popping in to cheer you guys on! We are still ahead of you, but you can catch up. (OK, so I am not so good at smack talk... )

Hey, you guys want to get in on doing some dares? We have a dare thread going where the most challenging one came from our ML. She suggested a chapter that references Nipper, whoopie pies, Uncle Sam, local raw wool, Dutch spellings, and ski poles! Triple points if you can make that chapter the love scene in your book.

Frankly, the idea scares me, but several of our feisty folk have taken the challenge.

Do you people do that sort of thing? Want to?

:)

Hey Anon, we drew dares out of a jar at our kick-off. It was fun and funny.

I'm writing a murder-mystery so most dares are out of the question, especially that one you listed. That's crazy.

But hey, feel free to come back here and post lots of long posts, with dares and challenges... anything that keeps you from padding your word count! Come on back!!

LOL... how do you know I am not using all of this, and your replies IN my NaNo?

But good for you! Glad you guys are having fun! We are having a write in tomorrow morning (like we have done every Saturday of NaNo for the past several years...) and we will be thinking of you, but not too much because we will be busy writing like mad.

Hi, Riverside. JT from Albany. It's interesting that although the number of people who have joined our two regions is almost identical, we have 224 "active and homed" to your 190, and where that really pays off is we have 174 people actually contributing to our word count; you have 139. It's like playing with 35 writers tied behind your back! Gosh, I love unfair advantages (but I will point out that we also lead in average work count). Write on!

When you're on the main Riverside regional page, if you click on the Regional Information tab at the top of the page, you can see the information on our word count as well as the two regions who've challenged us. We're actually getting closer to Charlotte.

Keep writing people. We can do this!!

Albany again...

OK.. you want smack, here it is. We are close to half a million words ahead of you... 450, 017 to be exact, as I write this.

You guys need to hurry up... I somehow am guessing that your three hour advantage in the end is not going to help you THAT much. Come on, slowpokes!!

Love and kisses,

Yeah, not exactly sure how it works but your ML wanted a one day write-off on the 15th and then final count. We may have a chance on the 15th. Not too sure about the total count. But you have more peeps than we do. And yes, you're still beating us on average words per WriMo.

Congrats on giving the nicest smack I've ever read. :-)

Check out the Regional Info Link at the top of the regional page. On the right side of the page is the regional word wars display that shows how we measure up with our rivals. We are VERY CLOSE to catching Charlotte.

VERY CLOSE!

So come on, people, WRITE! WRITE like the wind. Let your fingers fly across the keyboard and let the word counts soar!!!

Write on, Riverside!!!

Does NaNo track this by our word count updates or do we need to submit it somewhere else?

Here we sit in Albany... at our half way day write in... hosted by SWAG, the Schenectady Writers Assistance Group. 16 of us are writing like mad. Most of us have exceeded our personal word goals for the day, and our total after three hours of sprinting is.... drum roll please.... 39,592 words. Beat THAT Riverside!

NaNo does NOT track this way. Just post your one day word total in this thread and I'll total it. Or perhaps delegate to Landon. :-)

I think we thought the most accurate way to do this would be to subtract yesterday's total for the region from today's total and that would be the one day count. That will only happen after midnight, of course, when the bar graph for the region updates today's total. But our write in went VERY well, we exceeded the group goal for the day, in fact, I believe we came very close to writing a whole NaNovel between us. A very ODD one, to be sure, given the range of topics we are working on (a comic book hero novel, a story about an old woman with Alzheimer's, and a sword and sorcery fantasy being just some of the spread).

Many of us are going to keep writing, so it will be a race to the finish, with you all finishing three hours behind us. Go go go!!! And make sure you get your word count updates in before the clock strikes midnight!

:)

Don't worry about us!!! We have plenty of time. Our clock strikes midnight three hours later. ; )
