I am also a friends-only tweeter but I do enjoy being in contact with local writers.
I agree with Spleen, it does take the edge off of the writer's loneliness.
I unfriend spammers, or if I get overwhelmed. I actually decided to follow a couple of TV show fan posters and then decided it was knocking back the posts of nanos etc that I really wanted to see.
