Or lack there-of.
How is everyone doing? Keeping up with the word count? Banging your head off the keyboard yet? Plot line taken over by random bit-part characters? MC accidentally dead? Or is everything going as planned?
Tell us how it's going.
Currently I'm a little over 2k and feeling good about the beginning. It has set the scene, which is all I need. I still have no plot, but I never do. I leave that to my characters. All in all, a good start!
Someone shame me by telling me they're on 10k or over already! I always get cross when that happens :-D
Oh, and I have Dory, from Finding Nemo, in my head singing "Just keep writing, just keep writing, what do you do, just write, write, write." It's very annoying.
Good luck writing everyone!

Just over 3k at the moment, I'd like it to be 4k before I go to bed... Right from the start my main character hijacked the entire thing and decided to go clubbing (in bloody London) instead of staying home on his own.
I spent ages trying to get it back on track, and then in the spirit of NaNo just gave up and chucked all my notes in the bin.
It's acutally pretty fun to write, and probably way more interesting than what I had planned originally, although it does mean that I've been listening to Fedde Le Grand, Lady Gaga and Dizzee Rascal all freaking day!
Yay, NaNo is here again :)

Well done Cerys! Always good to see fellows ahead on their count.
I managed to get just shy of 2k done between midnight and 2am. I spent most of the day pottering around watching bad TV and playing Warcraft until prime writing time started (that'll be from now until 2am again). Hopefully I'll hit 3k before the clock ticks over as I still have loads to write in chapter one.
And now, back to the grind for me.

1400 and trying for the 2k before midnight. Started okay but MC has turned from serious to humorous when he shouldn't have!
I might just kill him off and dispose of his body behind the laptop. (Oooops...I can't do that as it's in the first person.)
Don't know where I'm going with the storyline but as I've been taken over by the characters so far, I'm sure they'll get me through this.
Now listening to Jefferson Starship's 'Miracles' (because I'm old and can!) and wondering what the hell I'm doing this for!!!!
Good luck all

I haven't started yet. Twenty-five hours in, most of which I have spent at home. All I've done is paste the wordsworth poem from which my title is taken at the top of a brand new word document... ahhhh. And I've selected a new Nano notebook, and written my name in it, and "Nano 09".
I don't think any of these things really count, though...

Haribo! I love Haribo. Great idea. But I wouldn't have will power not to sit and eat them all instead of writing.
Red Octopus, sounds a multiple personality MC ;-) Some characters just aren't what you want them to be. As you're writing it in first person, it could be that your own mood and humour was being reflected in the character? If you're going for moody/serious then try listening to some music that makes you feel that way, or watch a dark movie before writing. I recommend anything by Steven King (such as Mist) followed by some Evanescence. If that doesn't work, kill off your MC and raise his evil twin. Or bring in a character who balances him out by being extra serious/dark/moody.
Frann, no I don't think it does. Hope you manage to make more progress today.
momentary - just make it up as you go along, and research it later ;-) Failing that, find ways of putting lengthy explanations of your research into your novel (maybe a very stupid character that needs everything explained to him in great detail).
Well done those people who have whizzed through so far!
I managed a couple of hundred more words last night, but not much (on account of having had too much wine to concentrate). I have to write a minimum of 987 words today to meet quota. Here's hoping I can do a bit more than that.

Melisende and I had both managed our first day's quota by 1:30am yesterday... After she'd gone home, I bashed out today's, in order to have a day in hand with the intention of getting some essay done. That's gone totally out of the window, because I'm afraid of it. (1,500 words is really nothing, but when it's a critical assessment of Theodore Roosevelt's speech on manly virtues in relation to the close of the frontier and American imperialism... well, NaNo is a lot easier.)

This is the first time I've tried NaNo, and I'm pretty pleased by my word count. Everything I'm writing is terrible though, but I've just introduced some cool characters who hopefully will liven things up a bit.
I don't have any idea of my overall storyline, though.

I managed another 400 or so words this morning before passing out again (yay being ill) which means that I'm just ahead on my cumalative word count, but I'm behind on my daily goal of 2k or finishing the chapter. I'm not convinced that this chapter will yield 2k, but at 400 words without naming the MC (of this chapter) I figure I can get a bit more mileage out of it.
Wow, that rambling really should have gone in my novel.

~wave~ Hi all!
I'm not actually in Brighton (or, um, anywhere near England, for that matter), but as I currently have no plans to meet up with any of the more local groups and there are plenty of familiar screen names here still, I'll keep my region affiliation here...
Progressing well so far. This is going to be a busy month... I'm going to be out of town for a convention the 19th through the 22nd, and there will be lots of family goings on the next weekend (Thanksgiving), so I'm trying to get as far ahead as possible early on. Started with a 4k day, and hoping to hit 3k/day during this week. I expect things will slow a bit after that, as fatigue sets in and the plot heads in some unexpected direction, but anyway.
Happy writing everyone!

I'm joining Kaliopae & Lana in the nanowrimo sick bay (hope you both get well soon) with what I suspect is sinusitus but now appears to be turning into some kind of achey/dizzy/slightly nauseous thing.
As a consequence of that & only getting back from nephew's third birthday party a couple of hours ago (seriously, it was pretty hardcore - no wonder I'm sick!) word count is pants.
& what I do have isn't what I was expecting. Far darker & more sombre & not as much 'eeeee! We're a bunch of ker-azee radioactive glam rock chimps' as I thought.
This monkey's off to bed soon so will have to try & catch up on words another time but seriously impressed with all those already well into the thousands. Good luck all & look after your sinuses 'cos they're horrible when they go wrong!

Fantastic advice, Sibyl. Instead, I've let it go down the mildly humorous route after starting Pratchett's The Colour of Magic again. I was already re-readin Steven King's "It" anyway as I find that midly amusing too! As for music, I've just thrown out my Paper Lace and Aqua collection and I now have on Evanescence and Still Remains to balance the humour with some scary stuff.
In the meantime, I'm on a roll now because the Two Sawyers in Pett has let me sit in the bar using their electricity and wireless connection! Poor me!
Thanks and good luck!

This is my first NaNoWriMo. I've been less well-behaved than I originally planned, but I've been keeping myself egged on with a spreadsheet which has my current progress and the 'par' for each day, which is the 1,667. I've hit better than my par on Day Two, but the others I was worse. Today I was doing better than yesterday, catching up with my abysmal 4477 (-524 than my needed amount) but while I was thinking "I should try to sleep vaguely early" I got inspired, wrote an additional 672 words and now I'm trying to get my brain to shut up so I can be up early tomorrow and carry on.

This thought right here? This is madness. You will soon learn to embrace the NaNoWriMo Insomnia that is practically the official mascot for the month ;)
In all seriousness, if you can get yourself to work on command like that PLEASE TEACH ME! If I have the inspiration I have to write right now oh god yes please make it stop because otherwise I will never do it. This means I have dragged my laptop into bed with me after waking up at 5am, or written while walking down really steep hills (curse you, Lewes hospital!) or, on one occasion, used my friend as a table and written on a napkin. It makes for fun stories to tell people, though it is not so good for the sanity...
Er. I have no idea what I was saying any more. Oh yes, that was it: Write now. Sleep in December. ;)

I do seem to remember that on either my first or second NaNo I was manageing to get up early every morning and get half an hour of writing done before heading work. I have no idea how I managed that, seeing as these days I tend to get up about 20mins before I have to leave!
I have now discovered the usefullness of writing on the bus to and from work. It's the messiest handwriting ever, as the bus jolts along Church/Western Road, but it means I get another 500 words done instead of wasting that time every day. Hasn't stopped me falling behind my target, though...

Well, I'm a little behind at the moment, but not too worried. Hopefully I'll catch up today, as I'll be meeting Nina in town for a coffee, chat and hopefully a little writing. I shall take my netbook to bed with me tonight and bash out as much as I can.
I On Sunday I am having an op. to remove a non-malignant cyst from the base joint of my right index finger. It's apparently routine, and I'll be in and out in a day, but I am strongly allergic to hospitals and have a phobia of needles. I'm all wound up already.
Anyway, I have to get ahead of my word count before Sunday, which is going be a challenge. Because I don't see much writing getting done Sunday, Monday, or possibly for the week, with my right hand out of action. I'll type as best I can with my left hand, but it's very slow going.
Wish me luck

For my part, I've made sure I'm well ahead each day and am writing a minimum of 2k words every day. The other day, I managed about 3 and a half thousand, which amazed me, as I never write that much in one hit.

Glad you liked my method! I also have a growing stash of food - including a crunchie bar and a Percy pig - that's waiting for me if I hit 50k.
My aim is 5k every 2-3 days which is 1 word behind the recommended word count for 3 days... so it's not too bad. It's just a question of finding the time! Especially with college, I find myself thinking about it in class when I should be concentrating on Napolean III. Not good. :)
