According to my most likely wrong calculations, 50,000 words over 30 days averages to 1,667 words a day. You MUST average this number to win! Don't write the minimum and stop, however- that would leave you no room for error. Personally, I'm trying for 2,000 a day. This way I have a surplus in case I have a bad day or two. I really encourage you to go beyond the minimum.

I completely agree that 2000/day is a more realistic goal. Life has a way of throwing you curveballs just when you don't know what your characters are going to do next.
I would add, rack up as many words as possible on Day 1 and on your days off, or any days when you have more time available. This doesn't get you off the hook for 2000 words on the other days. But when you're considering throwing in the towel, a good cushion will come in handy.
Also, if you find you're not able to make your daily quota, throw away your outline. Let your characters wander aimlessly and collide. Let in any nonsensical characters. Free yourself.
Revised manuscripts make sense. Rough drafts don't have to.

Heh, I just told people to write 2k, and I could only barely pass the 1,667 minimum. I'll have to make up for it today!

I felt good about getting 800 words last night. Of course, I like the writing program from www.drwicked.com, because with it timing me last night, I made the 800 words in under 45 minutes. Hopefully I can find a little longer to write tonight, and I'm using the "no outline" idea of writing, so my story has jumped three time periods so far. I'll put stories in order after I finish this month.

Keep in mind the NaNo mantra NO PLOT NO PROBLEM sometimes the best laid plans become bricks in the wall of writer's block....
