There seem to be quite a lot of students in general kicking about this year, and since we all love procrastinating on our assignments and note-writing-up, I reckon we should have some sneaky wee write-ins on campus! I need some more crazy people to prove to me this is possible~

I'm not sure what the best venue would be -- maybe Teviot or the library, possibly somewhere off campus that's open (ie Beanscene or Chocolate Soup) if we're doing evening write-ins. Don't know about everyone else, but my timetable is subject to a lot of variation -- Wednesday afternoons or evenings would be good but I could probably just about make most any evening given fair warning.

Gie'z some suggestions and best times, and we'll sort out something weekly or bi-weekly or something, depending~ :]

If anyone's at Kings Buildings (and there's a few, I'm guessing), the JCMB has LOADS of plug sockets that would make a suitable write-in location. Possibly at the same time as a George Square write-in?

Teviot's probably best for a George Square write in. It's never too busy during the day, and I'd be likely to come along at least a couple of times.

I can make pretty much anything in theory, as long as it's close to George Square and after 5pm. Wednesday nights would definitely work for me. As to locations, I have no suggestions-- I can just about cope without a plug now that I've got a semi-decent laptop, so as long as there's room to sit, I'm happy!

Great minds think alike! I was planning on planning some wednesday afternoon writeins, since most of us have nothing timetabled then. If we go for Teviot, it's open to the public in the afternoon. Or if there're a lot of people KB-wards (or willing to catch a free bus), JCMB is pretty much perfect. Comfy sofas, tables, and cheap coffee ftw.

I was thinking 2 'til 6 on Wednesdays?

wednesday afternoon and evenings seem like a good option!

are there plugs in teviot? actually, my laptop is notoriously fickle with regards to nice battery life and the mouse buttons are knackered, so i'm going to take it in while it's still under warranty -- which could mean no laptop for me for the duration of nano! D: we should go somewhere where there are computersssss (or i will pikey my flatmates' if all else fails, i am sure they will not miss them for too long. ;])

3 - 7pm at teviot on wednesday good?
(ps, where abouts in teviot, that building is bloody massive! :3)

I'd join in if someon would tell me where to head to in Teviot... still can't find my way around that stupid complicated building haha!!

Would anyone be interested in descending on Appleton Tower? There's a number of computers in the cafe and plenty space for laptops.

Anytime suits me :)

Appleton Tower maybe, but if we were doing it there, surely stealing one of the many rooms upstairs would be better.

And what about somewhere in the middle of Kings and George Square, like the JMC Bar at Pollock, or possibly that little cafe on the road up near the bike shop. I dunno if that has wifi though.... I'll check

But if we arrange one for Teviot this week and then discuss there, that sounds sensible.

3-7pm, writers room?

sure, sounds sensible, james!

i probably won't be there the entire time but will definitely swing by at 3ish to scout out the chat. :] (if i can find the writer's room -- is that the one just off the upstairs of the library bar? i could be making this up).

i don't really know my way around main campus (vets are like ONLY AT SUMMERHALL it's a little silly. the highlight of my week was visiting the William Robertson Building today to do a CAL. :/) so if somewhere is easiest for everyone i'll most likely turn up. =]

Okay, so here's my suggestion:

Write-ins at Teviot/Appleton and JCMB cafe/The Magnet from 2-6pm ish Wednesdays. I can do 2-2.45 and 3.30-5pm on Wednesdays, so I'll be around for some. Teviot would be Library Bar (I guess) or AT would be the concourse.

Anyone think this is good/bad?

I agree with everything you say Mantolwen, but if we have two, surely we're splitting the group, which lets face it, won't be huge anyway, into even smaller areas.

I'll be at the writers room on wednesday, probably earlier than 2, I finish at 1 in appleton, so I'll be there from then on really. I have nano stickers on my laptop if you didn't meet me on saturday. I might leave early though, my friends are dragging me out, against my will, for a birthday drink :(

Hope to see you there.

I'd come along on Wednesday afternoons at Teviot too, they are generally pretty free. Can anyone confirm about plugs though? My laptop can probably only do about an hour at best without one.

i'd like to know this too - my laptop's at the "20 minutes max before it packs in" stage!

Hmm. As for plugs in Teviot, I'm not entirely sure although I know there are some. However, if we want to go to Appleton in the following weeks, - is anyone else here a CompSci student? Because I have access to levels 3 and 4, which have loads of plugs and empty desks precisely for people workin on laptops, and generally they aren't too full.

Aw man - I have 3 hour labs on wednesday afternoon, making me pretty much ineligable for this, since I totally cannot skip labs. I don't suppose I can use my powers of persuasion to make people think of another day?

(It figures Wednesday is the only day my afternoon is really busy. Curse you, sod's law)

Boo, java labs! Booo! But, if you need sockets in teviot, the Mezzanine has a bunch hidden behind the sofas. If someone brings and extension thingy you'll have plenty! (Also there's computers there for non laptop people)

I can probably make the writers room in Teviot for a while. Won't be able to get there until 3pm (ish). Damn you long commute!

Anybody willing to give directions to the Writers Room? I don't even know where the Library Bar is :)

ouchh, that's a shame! personally my timetable is ridiculously variable so i'll probably be unable to commit to anything except evenings -- i'd be totally up for some evening write-ins in Beanscene (which is on Nicholson Street (I think? Possibly South Bridge, that entire street confuses me!) and open until 10 every day and makes me happy in my soul!) or the library or where-ever really!

I'm not a compsci student (like, at all :/), but if anyone is willing to 'sneak' us in using their magical student card then i am very much up for that. ;D

so arrangements for this wednesday, anyway:
TEVIOT ROW HOUSE (aka teviot), WRITER'S ROOM, TOMORROW BETWEEN ~2 AND 7 -- turn up at any time that suits and get scribbling away!

(i would also like directions. :3)

I think evening write-ins in Beanscene sound good.

I don't know where the writer's room is in Teviot, but the people at reception are very friendly and should point in the right direction!

The BeanScene on Nicholson is kinda tiny, though~ also if the Mezz has plugs, do we want to look into that? I've got a fourway extension I can bring and my laptop can survive up to four hours without charge (yes, I'm smug about that XD), so that could help. I'm more than willing to smuggle people into the labs (and, Mouslet, this year for me they're MIPS labs. T_T evil assembly code of doom. and python labs, but that's not too bad), we can chat about that tomorrow~?

Remind me, the writer's room, is that the one directly next to the bar, in the basement? (If so, when you get in to Teviot, head down the stairs with the giant moose head, hang a left at the bottom past the vending machine and the ladies' room, and it's straight ahead)

An evening write in would be pretty cool. I've never been inside the Beanscene so I dunno how suitable size wise it would be, but I'd definitely be up for it. Thursday afternoon/evening is pretty open for me since I have almost nothing on a thursdsay. Wednesday evening is ok too though after my lab I usually just want to collapse, not write D:

So...we're saying the Writer's Room in Teviot tomorrow afternoon, right? I finish class at 4 so I'm hoping to be there soon after.

Hope to see you all then!

Brilliant idea guys! I'll be there for sure. I have to head off to work around 3pm, so if any of you guys want to get an early start I'll be there around 12.30 so I can get in some good writing time.

On the off chance that part of Teviot isn't open at that time, I will head over to Starbucks (just across the road by the traffic lights) to get my vanilla lattes in, so find me there too.

See you tomorrow! x

I am a terrible student. I'm considering skipping my lab and doing some nano writing with you guys instead (that and I hate my labs but hey :D)

Me too! Except for me it was considering skipping my tutorial. But I'm just gonna write down here instead and think of all you guys up there. :D Good luck to you all!
