This is something that really helped me understand my charachters and write better last time I did this. I write a question, then the next person that comments answers the question FROM ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS' POINT OF VIEW. :-) Then you write a question for the next person to answer.

Example:

What is your favorite color?

(First person)

Elizabeth: I like purple. I suppose I've just gotten used to it since it is the color I must always wear since I am a mage.

Where were you born?

(Next person)

Richard: I was born in southern Jura in the country. My father was a sailor and taught my brothers and I everything about airships whenever he was home, and my mother stayed at home with us.

Who is your best friend?

(End example)

First question:

What is your favorite color?

Luke: I think my favorite color is turquoise, but Destiny says what I like has too much green so it's actually teal.

What gross or slimy thing do you really, really, hate?

Arrius: I really hate when our airship passes flocks of birds, and the birds all aparently hate airships. I usualy hide uner Elizabeth's robe when we pass a lot of them. The worst part is when they make Elizabeth clean it all up. Gross! That's when I go hide in the cargo hold. The good this is I can eat a snack there.

If you could visit any country where would you go and why?

Merlin: Cendred's kingdom, specifically the village of Ealdor. I was raised there and that's where my mother still lives. I love Camelot, really, but Mother's not there.

What's your favorite animal and why?

(Calvin Fletcher, main protagonist of "Frog Boy")

Oh! That's an easy one! I like salaman--no, wait, it was frogs! I'm an apprentice frog-keeper in my village, so i hang out with 'em all the time. Gotta have something for the locals to ride on, right? Besides, there is just no better friend on earth than my buddy Eyeball; she's a mid-western Torrent Frog! She's dark green and weighs around 1800 lbs! ;3

Is there someone in your life that you truly admire? Briefly describe said person.

Adam: I really admire someone who has risen from the ashes. It's a tough life and sometimes you really just have to start all over. I can't seem to figure it out myself, but I see it's possible in other people.

Elizabeth: My earliest memory is from when I was three and we were still the rulers of Jura. My father had just signed a peace treaty with Achaea, and to celebrate we had a huge banquet. I was playing a game with one of the Achaean princes, I can't remember if it was Justin or Capernicus, and we accedentaly knocked over a table of grapes and olives.

What is one of your pet peeves and why does it bother you?

Dakota Foreman: Pet peeves? Oh god. My worst pet peeve? I guess that would be how long it takes Nicopop to do his hair. Seriously, my hair is hella longer than his and he takes forever. I hate having to wait for him so we can go to school and I really hate when Maya bitches about him being late to pick her up for a date because he's doing his hair. Seriously, he always does stupid shit like that. He's the only person I know who literally does use the excuse that he's busy washing his hair. And means it.

Arrius: My worst memory was when Otto died... I had been with him for almost forty years. Then that evil fat man caught me while I was crying and put me in a bird cage! He had me in there for a week before he tried to sell me. That's when Elizabeth rescued me. She kind of reminds me of Otto when he was young. Humans age so fast.

Who is your best friend and why do you like him/her?

(From Maya Flores-Medina, one of the main characters of The Pursuit.)

Maya: My best friend? I have several. First, there's Dakota Rose Foreman, or Kota. I don't even remember when we became friends to be honest. We were so young. I love her because she's awesome. Next is Heath Lucas. I met him through Nick. He's just so damn funny that it drives me wild. Too bad he's always drunk now. I want to shoot him sometimes... Wait, given current circumstances, not that funny. Last is Nick Medina, my husband. I'm lucky. I married my best friend. I met him through Dakota and we hit it off immediately. We dated for two years and then we eloped a few months ago. I'm lucky. I married my best friend.

Narrator: I knew Zakkai wouldn't answer for you, so I asked him this myself. He didn't know I had a tape recorder in my pocket.

Zakkai: . . . . . . This isn't something I would normally share with anyone. Considering it's you asking I will tell you. Eight years ago, when the new emperor's vile ways were just beginning to be obvious to everyone else, I was the reason our father died. Richard and Michael know this, and I don't know why they've forgiven me. Michael even tried to tell me that it wasn't entirely my fault, which is a lie. . . Anyway, I got into an argument with my father about the rebellion. He had been spending the last two years among various mages, studying prophesies about the war. I was angry that we couldn't stop Emperor Flavius, I said we were taking too long, that he wasn't trying hard enough. I was just angry. I made him angry. When people are angry they don't think. . . He was caught and executed that night. . . . . . I haven't allowed myself to show anger since then. I am doing all I can to protect my brothers and the princess. . . Could you leave me alone for a while? I need to- *click*

Calvin: My purpose? Um, geez, I don't usually think about heavy questions like that. But i guess, so far, it's been to save my village from this epidemic that's slowly killing everyone. Really, after that's done, I don't know what my purpose will be, but i guess I probably will go back to not thinking about it anymore, which I guess is okay.

Vale: My dad's homemade mashed potatoes. He always uses the fresh potatoes and herbs from Mom's garden. Rosemary, basil, some sauteed onions--plus he boils the peeled potatoes in a mix of olive oil and pepper. I tried making it my first week living in England, but I can't cook something even decent enough for my cat to eat. I'm gonna go call him, see what he's doing, maybe beg for a care package.

Ah, I think I just fangirled. Yay for someone else doing a Merlin story for Nano! =D You have no idea how happy it makes me to not only see a Merlin writer, but to see one in the Louisville region!

Technically I'm still doing an original piece for Nano, but with how terrible it's coming along, I've really thought about using a Merlin/Morgana story that I've been working on.

Ah, that made me really happy. =D

And to answer to this from one of my orginal characters
Have you ever been in love?

Sinclair: I believe so, at one point. I do not feel as empty as some that I have seen. But I do not remember anything about my life before I entered purgatory. (How sad!)

What is your fondest memory?

Titus Flavius: My fondest memory. I have quite a few to choose from, but I know by far my fondest would be ten years ago when I came into power. That moment when I looked into the eyes of Emperor Cyrus as I took his life with my own blade, when I knew my rebellian had suceeded and I would now be named Emperor, years of hard work blossoming into a beautiful new dynasty without any Vespasians left to challenge me, that is an indiscribable feeling.

Do you have a family? If so please describe how you feel about them.

(Calvin) My dad's name is also Calvin Fletcher. He's the village tailor, and he put the Doc's special everything-proof lining on the frame of the indestructible umbrella he gave me to use on my mission. My mom's name is Cynthia, and she's a housewife. She cooks and cleans and give me whoopin's like my dad never could. Last of all, I have a little sister named Anna. She may be small and innocent, but she's a lot smarter than I am (although admittedly that's not hard to do).

What would be the single most horrible thing that could happen to you?

Michael: Flavius could catch us. The rebellion would end. The princess would either be killed first because she is the only real threat to him, or she would die last and have to watch my brothers' and my deaths. I can assure you none of them would be quick. . . Then that man would be emperor for the rest of his life, and his family after him. Jura would eventually fall.

What is something that always makes you happy no matter what?

Calvin: My best friend Haley. Just like with the rest of my friends we grew up together, but i hung out with her the most. What always makes me happy is thinking back on all of the good times we had, all of the times she got mad at me for doing stupid stuff, all of those times when we just sat there at the Lilly Pad for hours without hardly even moving until our joints hurt. My good memories are the greatest treasures i have.

Merlin: Yes, every time I save Arthur's life. But I can't tell anyone except Gaius about any of it unless I want to be executed for using magic.

BECKET: a line i won't cross? probably the one that's drawn on a high cliff. if crossing it results in death, then i won't do it. however, if you're talking proverbial? well then i don't know that there is one. i'm trysexual, meaning i'll try anything... probably thrice, just to make sure that i get a full range before judging said activity. i've been described as being quite reckless, one of the things that me and lo have in common. okay, now that you mentioned lo, here's a line i won't cross. i won't hurt her. not in the way i inadvertantly hurt her before. she's been through too much. and i won't put myself in a position to make her go through more.

Nolan: Funny story about that, I was 19 years old, my wife at the time was 17. It was the early 1800's so sex before marriage was just unheard of. We both had NO idea what we were doing. It was horrrible! We laughed a lot, and made our way through it, and it did get better but not near as much fun as I have now or have had in the past 2 years. Trust me, sex does get better with age and experience. I haven't had any complaints and lots of repeat performances

Answering the above question in the perspective of my main character, Jack Heflin, directly from the narrative of my Nano novel.

"I scampered out clamping my mouth wide-eyed. The vomit still seeped between my fingers and splattered one dot at a time onto the place I hunched over. Naked males and females, from infancy to elderly, had been strung up on meat hooks, the points of which were long enough to cross the length from the jaw to the crown. Many were still fleshy but I had glimpsed a few skeletons with intermingled spines and toothless mandibles."

Q: How did your character pass his or her spare time before the events in your novel?

----------

2006 - E.C. Battalion [50,435 words]
2007 - Diamonds and Catfish [50,289 words]
2008 - The Seventh Act [35,844 words]

Going to answer Chigun's question now:

Calvin: I used to spend a lot of my time working on the Frog Farm, but when i was done with that, me and my friends would go hang out at the Lilly Pad, where we can buy snacks and stuff from vendors. I also can't seem to go a day without jumping off of something, usually into a large body of water. I love swimming so much, i do it pretty much every day. None of the other kids in my village can beat me in a race across any body of water!

What do you really pride yourself on?

Narrator: I am so proud to have found the gateway to their other-world, to have come to know Elizabeth and Arrius and the men. It was quite by accident really, when I was traveling from Italy to Grease in that... Well, that's another story, and I'm on my way there while I'm typing this, and it is rather hard to pilot this plane and tell you at the same time in this storm. I'm so happy to see Elizabeth again. You would like her now. She's much older now than when the story took place, but I was much older back then too so I guess we're even. Sorry, I digress.

Why are you doing what you are doing right now?
