As I start writing tonight I was wondering how everyone starts their novels.

Do you:

A) Start writing at the beginning on the story and follow it chronologically.

B) Write out of order. Whichever scene comes at you first.

c) Type in your notes and fill in the details later when the moment hits you.

Happy writing

For me it's A.

I've always written chronologically, except in a few cases where I'd already planned to tell the story not quite in order. I do have an outline completed before I ever start writing, so in theory I could pick a later scene and write it - but in practice I've never done that.

Mostly A, but sometimes B. If I have a real hard time with a beginning, then I start writing at the first scene I can get a good handle on, and then go back later to figure out the beginning. But lately *knocks on wood* my beginnings, while tough, have at least been manageable enough that I can write the novel in order.

Start with C, follow up with A, then scatter B in wherever need be.
I generally start at the beginning, but if I get inspired for something further along, by all means, get it down before the moment is gone. There are no rules.
If your really stuck go completely left field. Just start writing what ever crazy stuff comes to mind and run with it. Even if you have to edit it out later, it gets your brain juices flowing. The key here is to write - whatever, in the order your brain gives it to you. Sounds crazy, but your noodle actually knows what style will work best for you, you simply need to trust yourself and release the need to have everything be orderly and make complete sense; at least in the beginning. Tying up loose ends is what the rewrite is for. Worry about that in December.

I didn't even have a clue what I was going to write about this year until I sat down and started hammering stuff out. The story is there, if you listen it will come to you.

Best of luck NaNo-ers!

I suppose I start with B for the first scene, but once I find a good one, I move on with A for most of the novel. At certain points I may use C to get recharged again, but after that it falls back to A. Did that make any sense? lol

I'm more of a B. I have loose outline in my head but end up jumping around with characters and POV.

Usually it's a mixture of all three. Really depends on what I'm writing and if I just want to go balls to the wall and get the words out.

For this one it took forever with a delete and an undelete and a partridge in a pear tree.

Oh and there was a prologue, but I'm not too proud of that. =)

Radio silence.

“Alpha Three?” There was a trace of frustration in C-Com’s voice as he tried to radio the third platoon.

“Bravo One to Command.”

“Go Ahead, Bravo One.”

“Roger, Bravo One. Good luck.”
