I'm just curious as to how "readable" people's novels are.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesch-Kincaid_Readability_Test

I'm sitting at a Grade of about 10.5, or a Reading Ease of 60.6%, according to M$ Word. (You can calculate the scores manually instead, if you can be bothered.)

I'm also curious about a possible link between genre and readability. (Since it's more a measure of average word length etc, I figure that scifi stories will be low readability, while romance *cough*smut*cough* will probably be at the other end of the scale.)

That's way too hard. Spell check. Blargh. I've got too many rules to ignore!

But I'm at 7.4 and a reading ease of 74% Woot.

Haha, that's really interesting! I have a Reading ease of 75.3, and a grade level of 4.9. So mine is surprisingly easy to read---Spell check took awhile, apparently I have too many fragmented sentences XD

I um... didn't bother spell checking. It looked too hard. So I went here instead: http://www.joeswebtools.com/text/readability-tests/

:D

Apparently I have a reading ease score of 84.1 and my grade level is 4.4. Interesting!

Mine seems relatively readable too - a reading ease of 80.3 and a grade level of 4.3. Perhaps I'm getting the easy bits down first?

6.5th grade, 78.2 overall.

So it's pretty easy to read, but I won't be wanting any 11 year olds to read this. Oh definitely not.

Yeah, go me, an idiot could understand what I write. Not that I can, but... Reading ease of 88.6, and Grade of 3.1... I don't think some of the grade 3s I know would get it.

Grade level: 6.25
Readability: 77.91%

That's not too bad. I guess grade 6ers could read it if it wasn't for the stuff about suicide. I was thinking more high school and up, but that's not too bad. Readability grade is good though.

I got a grade level of 4.3 and a reading ease score of 83.2. I'm actually rather happy because the easier it is to read, the better. It is, after all, for kids. My book is aimed at about 10 to 13 year olds, so the lower grade level is good. It's interesting to see what others get, though.
