So, some people like to listen to music while they write, some like to listen to it before and after they write.

While I write, I listen mostly to stuff without lyrics: Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Nobuo Uematsu, Beethoven, Klaus Badelt, Howard Shore....Lots of movie soundtracks.

While I'm prepping for a writing session I listen to Within Temptation, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Enya, Nightwish, Three Days Grace, Skillet, Breaking Benjamin and Celtic Woman.

What do ya'll listen to?

Lately I've been listening to Heather Dale songs. Since my normal laptop died, I've had to scrounge up her stuff on YouTube and put it into a playlist on there. I miss being able to set a single song on an infinite loop like I used too, though. :( The tune of her song "Joan" fits the mood of my story really nicely. I generally just tune out the words; I've heard the songs so many times that the words are just background noise; they don't really filter through enough to distract me.

I also like listening to musical soundtracks. A few months ago, I was on a huge Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat kick. I couldn't write unless that soundtrack was going in the background.

But most of the time, any of the music that I (normally) have saved on my laptop will doo. I just need to have something going in the background.

If its a high intensity scene, I'll usually listen to some metal or hard rock, something calmer if its just a regular scene, but usually if I've found a song that fits the moment I'll listen to it over and over (and over) again until the the moment has passed. I've done that with Matchbox 20, Better than Ezra, The Verve Pipe, Linkin Park, The Who, Warren Zevon.
Cool post idea!

I have a very difficult time writing if there's any sort of major distraction - and that includes most of the music I normally listen to. Lately, though, I've been throwing on my noise-canceling headphones and listening to instrumental tracks from Phillip Glass: namely, piano solos from the Metamorphosis.

Much like with more 'normal' times, my musical tastes are all over the place. When writing I tend to just put iTunes on shuffle and see what it comes up with. (the other day it was having a very Bowie centered day...)

If the song doesn't work with what I'm writing, I skip it. Last night a rather playful song came on (by Hera) and gave me a great idea on where to start MC #3's story. I was very pleased as it best illustrates the kind of personality I have pegged her as having. I was relieved as I had been trying to figure out how to introduce her. I had future scenes in mind, but that first one was annoying me. Then Hera came on and the scene just flowed.

So yeah, anywhere from Lordi to Satie to Hera to Sarah McLachlan and loads in between.

If you guys haven't checked out the NaNo soundtrack forum and seen the topic on the NaNo CD swap, I highly suggest it!

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3266133

You get put in a group with 3 other people and you send out CDs of music to each of them. Then you get a CD back from each of your group members of their music. I've already received two and its been great! Sign ups are open til Nov. 8th.

Oh! You just reminded me that I haven't installed iTunes on my new (well, new as of mid-August) laptop yet.

I listen to all kinds of music when I'm writing, including Heather Dale. Something that's been super useful for writing is Radio Rivendell, a website that plays mostly lyric free fantasy music. Try it if you write fantasy :D
