Okay, after four days of writing, I'm planning to take a little bit of time Wednesday evening to go check out the new Barnes & Noble. I'm really curious to see if this would be a good place for me to write or if I'd rather just stay at home in my quiet office.

So it opens Wednesday? Cool. I'd been wondering when it would happen. I'll have to stop by and check it out.

YAYYAYAY! I'm so excited about this; I've been very spoiled by my lovely, two-story B&N at home (Dallas), and it is so nice to see it here. I hope they'll have a similar set-up of a cushy chair/presentation section (with about 14 stuffed chairs in a single, quiet location.

Ooooh, if so I might be taking my laptop to do some work. Sometimes a change of location is good for my brain! Plus there's a Starbucks inside :-D

I live right over by the old (and new) B&N and have been in the old store frequently lately. Judging from all the buildup and anticipation, I expect the new one will be a mad house for quite a while after the opening... most likely until after the Christmas shopping season is over.
I'm very excited to see it as well, but I have a feeling it will be a bit chaotic for a while to be conducive to the type of environment I need to write in. I could very well be wrong though.

OK, now my heart is all aflutter, LOL
Been waiting for B&N to open. SO glad they are not selling the Nook yet because I would buy it tomorrow!

Shon,
I totally agree. I am in complete LUST with the Nook. It's going to take every ounce of willpower I have to wait until December, so that I won't be distracted from writing!

Okay, first of all: what is the Nook?
Secondly, the new B&N is beautiful! It looks just like the ones in DFW, but it's here in Lubbock and it's beautiful...a rare and exciting combination. I can't wait to spend hours roaming around in that store...but presently, on with the novel!

It's B&N's ebook reader. Like Amazon's Kindle.

I'm thinking that waiting to visit is the best option... although I am stoked about getting to see the newest two-story bookstore to the South Plains (and possibly the only...) ^_^
Somebody who sees it let me know what the plug-in options look like. My laptop has no battery power whatsoever. McDonald's on Milwaukee & 82nd has let me down with it's whopping total of **1** eating areas with a outlet. Sad sad.
Perhaps the next time my roommate wants to have a loud movie night, instead of blasting out my eardrums with my iPod, I'll visit the bustling B&N. Maybe. That is, if my favorite Barista isn't working at Starbucks. (Why do they call the guys Baristas, too? Why don't they call them something masculine... like a Barust, or something like that?)
Anyway. Thanks!

Well, I went by there today and boy is it a nice store. The cafe has all round tables and on the first floor. On the second floor, there are two sitting areas with four nice chairs. They also have some large square tables (room for 2) along the windows on the second floor. Great for brining a laptop and writing.
I don't think it would be ideal for a big write-in (unless they allow us to rearrange the place for it), but it seems like a really nice place to write if we go as one or two people. The bad news....I did not see any plug sockets so be sure to bring long term laptop batteries or spares.
And...it wasn't nearly as crowded as I thought it would be. Busy of course, but not unbearable.

I went by there yesterday as well. It's nice. Not as large as the one I visited down in Austin, and I was slightly disappointed that all the fiction was moved up to the second floor, with videos, music and games on the first floor (what a sad commentary for a book store), but I enjoyed the cool B&N feel that one can find in big cities. And the coffee shop appears to be larger than it was at the old store, too.

i don't know...I kinda of like the books on the second floor. I plan to go there with my trusty laptop this weekend and go sit and stare out a second story window while writing (I like writing in high places...LOL).
I completely agree you can go in there and it doesn't feel like you're in Lubbock.

I got to go there tonight - it was A-MAZ-ING. The window seats are a really great place to sit and write - and people watch and people watching is always helpful to me when I get stuck. Though, it was rather busy. I wonder if it will continue to be so or not... I hope it dies down - even though it is in the mall.
Has anyone been to the Book Inn on 34th? It's stacked from ceiling to floor with books. I wonder if the couple that owns it would let people write there....

I do have one correction to make about the number of plugs.....I must have been staring at something else but almost every table on the second floor has a nearby plug socket for laptops. So, in theory, you could work there all night.
I've been a couple of times and it is busy, but not so busy I wouldn't be able to do some writing. And the noise level is about right. I'm planning to go there tonight and get out of the apartment for some writing. A change of scenery is always a good thing :-)
