I was shooting for 100k this year, as I've done for the past several years, but in writing the story ran into a snag. At about 18,000 words, my main character went to college. Which is the BEGINNING of her main storyline.

So, this novel may need to be 150K or even 200K. I'm not sure I'm up to that.... *whimpers*

On the plus side, the University of Mars that i've invented is AWESOME. I totally want to live there. :)

And there's a random Beatles joke in the book, that probably no-one will catch. But one of my side characters is named Maxwell Hamm. He's very rich, and owns his own short-distance space vessel, which he names the Silver Hammer. My MC tells a story about the time he crashed it into a lunar rock formation that is called The Head. So, in essence, Maxwell's Silver Hammer came down on the Head....yes, it's a terrible joke, but it seemed funny at the time.

Remember what I said about you cracking me up? Well, it's still true! You're freaking (at 21,000 words on day 3!) that your story might be even LONGER. :) I'm freaking because today I need to play catch up with my word count to stay on track to the 50,000. I'll whimper with you but for an entirely different reason!

Good luck - you're doing awesome!

Oh, and I personally love your Beatles joke!

Ne stressez pas, friend. Just work in chunks. I myself only allowed myself to plan the first 100k, but I know for certain that only gets me through half the story. For November I'm going to write my 100k, then work on the back half for December. Since you've written 100k Nano years before, just think of this as two Nanos in one year -- they just happen to be in the same book, which makes it easier.

Sending you supportive vibes,
Lymbic

There's a bit of old writing advice: Start the story as late as possible and get out as soon as it's done.

University of Mars sounds interesting. As for Maxwell's Silver Hammer, thanks for getting the song in my head :-) but on the other side of that, I wrote an entire 400 page tongue in cheek Cowboy novel some years ago. Tongue in cheek has its place...

Sheery, I'm with you completely, I feel like I'm just barely holding my own amidst these nano giants! Also, as a Beatles fan myself, I appreciate any subtle allusion, and kudos to the way you incorporated it into your story! :P
