What music are you listening to as you write? I have a combination of Pheonix, English Beat and Blue Stone with a few others thrown in for good measure.

Sometimes, I don't even have music playing at all...but other times, when I'm in the zone, I usually plug in whatever's on Pandora to different stations. The one station that seems to stick with me is one I labeled "Buckethead", which comprises of different instrumental guitarist songs from people such as the aforementioned Buckethead, Joe Satriani and Jeff Beck. For some reason, instrumentals such as this gets me into a writing vibe. Oh, I'm also a fan of Russian Circles as well. :-)

I'm using The Smiths as a foundation for my novel, so obviously I'm listening to both The Smiths and Morrissey. Then there's The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Lightening Seeds, Lush, Peter Murphy, New Order & Joy Division, lots mid-80's & 90's Brit pop, mostly. Though Phoenix IS a great choice too!

It's gotta be instrumental for me.
The American Dollar, Mono, Red Sparowes, 65daysofstatic, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Album Leaf and Explosions in the Sky are just a few.
Film scores litter my writing playlists, as well. Some dark, like the most recent Batman scores (by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, the latter produces some very excellent scores for the moody writer).

It'll be a challenge while writing my next project, a comedy, to keep the mood light since I'm so used to retreating into brooding music to help develop the images of a story in my head.

My defaults are always Radiohead and the Beta Band. Sometimes I'll throw in the Fall, the Cure, or David Bowie :)

I like to do some loud, brash stuff like punk rock, and turn it all the way down so it becomes a more concentrating and less distracting version of background noise. In my profile somewhere it says, "Dead Kennedies, Mindless Self Indulgence," and that's pretty much the case. Also stuff like the B52's, who made Rock Lobster.
