I am morally opposed to Starbucks (have a friend who used to work in the division in charge of searching out successful small businesses to open up shop next to and shut down.)

Would anyone be up for Forest Cafe or something along those lines instead?

Or maybe even somewhere like Negocianti or Press Coffee would be a plan??? I definately think Starbucks is a tad overrated.... And REALLY expensive coffee/tea wise.

The more write-ins the merrier! If you decide on a place/time, let me know and I'll put it on the schedule--just try not to conflict with other times! Hopefully I'll be able to stop by, too! Yay write-ins!

A small reminder to everyone who reads this thread, though: please be nice about the places people choose to write. Everyone has different reasons for why they pick a place to write, and we're here for the writing, not the reasons. Or if you're me, for the writing and copious amounts of caffeine and chocolate. But mostly the writing. :D

Great! What day/time works best for everyone? I have pretty much all the time in the world right now, so whatever works best for all of you.

Also, I'm not too bothered about the place. I'm new to Edinburgh, so Forest Cafe is the only place I really know of. I am absolutely open to a new place though!

I really like writing in the Starbucks at the West End - it's so spacious that I feel completely anonymous, which I find conducive to writing. My favourite café for other purposes is the Elephant House on George IV Bridge (which I noticed last time I passed has a notice up saying it's the 'birthplace of Harry Potter') but it often gets very crowded and I would always feel as if someone was looking over my shoulder.

Normally, I would agree with this! However, this would depend on weather. Also, I write much, much more on my laptop than with a pen and paper, so battery life would definitely be an issue!

Why don't we start with a day of the week? Seriously, I'm up for any day that works for everyone else.

This place sounds Nano friendly, and it's run by the people who do Spoon Cafe, so it's definitely cake friendly! http://news.scotsman.com/scotland/New-cafe-at-building-where.5783933.jp

Again, a bit Newington-based, but the cakes are probably worth the bus fare!

Close to campus, close to my office, which I would love to leave any. time. soon. So - yes, that would be a good possibility!

Outside is a fine idea. If it's summer.

Sorry, I love the idea but outside in Edinburgh November, trying to write for 2 hours, for me personally, doesn't sound pleasent.

Moving on:

There's a rainbow Cafe in Edinburgh?? The hell did I miss that?

There's a couple of good cafe's near me, in Cannonmills, such as Urban Angel and The Circle. Though that might be a little far out and they're a tad small.

I'm out by the botanics, so any place is a journey for me anyway. Spoon Cafe Bistro sounds like a good idea to me (I really like that they openly state that they are fine with people coming and sitting all day to write.) Unless anyone has a problem with it, I say we meet there.

Now, day and time. Suggestions?

Whoopdedoo - I used to go there when it was Nicholson's. if they have sockets for us to plug in, this could be quite a good base for writing... Elysse, whaddaya think?

from the article: The new premises will be known as the Spoon Cafe Bistro, and is due to open to the public on Monday [2nd Nov]

It's a bit far afield for people from the west side of town although I can understand its attraction for all the students at Univ of Edinburgh.
I think the Gallery of Modern Art cafe would be quite good for a write-in but it is only open during the day. I am very biased though, as is it underneath my office.

Wow, I hadn't even realised the Chinese buffet was gone! Guess I don't walk that way as much this year, not living on Nicolson anymore & all.

That sounds like an awesome place to write. I know a few people were saying that Sundays weren't that good for them, so maybe we could organize a Saturday thing there too ^_^

Though Spoon Cafe Bistro is out of the way for you, it is reachable to almost everyone on just one bus - Gallery of Modern Art Cafe is not (it's two buses for me, and I'm not even on the opposite side of the city.) You have to remember that people are coming from all over Edinburgh.

PLUS, I think there's something great about supporting a place that supports us, the writers, even if that means they lose out on profits.

Me and Macey will be checking out the spoon bistro tomorrow (er, today I guess, Friday) at around 5pm till whenever we get thrown out. Any other nanoers are welcome to show up with laptops and get some words in :D

dreamhonu, solidkid and I went to the new Spoon Bistro last night. We like!

I would love to have a write in there - yes its a little farther afield for us West Enders, but if they serve the coffee I will happily jump on a 35 and head along for a giant coffee with a little WriMo on the side (me = caffeine addict!) - it says they have cake too, I like cake, cake is goooood! :D

I could do any weekday morning until 3/ 3.30pm, but would totally prefer a Saturday as I have the entire day off so could stay all day and not have to be all sad when I have to run away and leave you guys to have all the WriMo fun without me.

The only day I can't do too easily is this Saturday as its my good buddy's 'Birthday Day Of Fun', so I have to go play with my friends, but may be able to squeeze in a bit of time in the evening depending on what time we finish.

Elysse - I vote YES! Lets get this place on the schedule! :) xoxo

So, would we rather do a Saturday or something midweek - like Wednesday (if Wednesday - those of you going to Starbucks as well will have a few days in between.)

Looking forward to seeing the place this afternoon, anyway!

Sounds a great place for a write-in, I'd certainly be up for a session there if I can fit it in my hectic schedule.

I think I'll come along to the Spoon place around 5 too, workmen have decided to take off the windows in the roof of my flat and chisel it for some reason so it is very loud and cold for writing at home.

Just got back from the write-in at Spoon Bistro Cafe, and I have to say that I really like the place! In fact, I plan on spending most of the day Monday there if anyone wants to join me. (Does anyone know what time they open? I forgot to look!)

Also, Robin and I are going to go back every Thursday for the rest of NaNoWriMo from 6 to whenever we are sick of writing.

They open at 10am I think :D

We (as in, me and macey) stayed until 10:30, so I could finally get my fanged yo-yo in. They serve really good chips! Food and drink all round is pretty expensive though.

sure, I'll join you there for a few hours on Monday, before I run away to work.

I'll be at the Starbies Write-In on Sunday so we can amass the troops then too. :)
