Hey guys,
As of this posting, we're on Day 3 and should be at 5,000 words by the end of the day. So, how are you holding up? Has the muse been singing, or have you been hearing the siren call of distractions instead? Have you been finding encouragement from others, or a lot of scorn and discouragement?
Take a quick break from your writing and let us know how you're doing!

Unfortunately, work has taken a very crazy turn in the last 48 hours, and so I'm having to play catch up. As in I need to start...
Sunday was spent walking the streets of Highland, Troy and Greenville. Don't ask...
I spent all day yesterday in the car driving to Springfield, Greenville, Collinsville and Sauget. Fun times...
HOWEVER, I have nothing going on tonight and fully plan to sit down and start playing some mad catch up.

About 1K words short of my mark for today, but there are still hours in the day. Writing without self-editing (which I usually do) has been very productive. Actually, I've written some scenes that surprised me, but still fit in the novel. Hurray for spontaneous and crazy thinking!
(OK, back to writing again.)

It has been a challenge for me so far. I usually only write when I feel inspired and am very slow and deliberate in the process. I want to love what I write. It is definately daunting to be staring at a computer screen and forcing yourself to write anything to make your day quote.
The timed challenges at the write-in on Sunday were a surprise. I know at the time I was just pushing myself to write whatever came to mind and in the end I thought it was crap/nonsense/useless. Now while my estimation of the quality of what I wrote hasn't change much I was surprised to find that some of the ideas that were generated had some story value and weren't throw-away. (Even a weird tangent about two kids going on an easter egg hunt.)
The other challenge has been forcing myself not to edit. This is perhaps the toughest thing of all as I'm use to constant, in-progress revisions.

I'd like to note that self-editing is not BAD, per se, but you have to develop the discipline to make it an in-and-out operation. If you see something that needs fixing, and it's bugging you, fix it. But then get right back to writing.
I have had to revise several sections already just to stay consistent with facts or characters I've added in. It's not a big deal, and it often improves my word count! But I am always mindful that any edit that requires more than 5 minutes of my time can wait until December.
Incidentally, major edits can simply be noted, either with the "comments" system in Word or a simple parenthetical or bracketed paragraph that says:
[Come back and fix me later!]
Easy enough!

Well, life was full on Sunday, but started yesterday. I wrote 7 or 8 pages in long-hand on the train. I was short a couple of hundred words once I got it typed up, but got it caught up this morning. Now just need to get my 1667 in for today. The thing I noticed is that I really need to pay attention to detail. I've forgotten how to do that naturally after not writing for a year or two. Still feeling pretty good about my storyline :)

I edit as I go...only because i read what I have writen, keeping my story on track and when I see a mistake i can't help but edit. But I also make sure that the editing doesn't slow me down in the amount I want to write a day. I try for 2-000 daily. Some days I get on a roll. So I steam ahead. I like to be ahead of the game. I still have another 2900 to write today to get to the goal of 8000 before Wednesday . Jan

I ended up changing my plot last moment to a erotica / vampire. I am still going to tackle the other one, but this one just seemed more urgent when I looked over the plotline I had already pre-written.... usually something I do when I have an idea.
Anyway I am going on 13K and about to update in a few minutes.

I just took the near 5k words I had out back and shot them. So I'm at 0 words! Wooooooot!!! And I feel much better back at the start with nothing then I did with the nice on task word count I had going. I don't know if I will get much writing done tonight either, I am more plotting and character creating, but not worried about losing a word race with myself.

My characters are arguing about stuff that's not on topic. These tangents - rants, even - are causing the word total to pile up.
I always worry that I'm going to have to throw all this stuff out, but in rewriting it seems to hang together and if I let them talk long enough they work around to where everything they said actually does fit with the topic.
The subconscious mind is smarter than I am, I guess. Or maybe I just need a plot/outline so that I can get excited about rebelling against it and thereby flouting authority.

I have to admit it's been hard maintaining even in the first week. I haven't flexed by creative muscles in a while, so sometimes I find myself staring at the screen. I was short my quote for the 3rd by 200 words. Need to get back to my target of 2K a day.
Spent an hour yesterday finally doing some research for a few ideas I had going. Hopefully this will pan out.
