I've been thinking about how I want to set my story up and I had a question. I didn't know if my idea would fall within the rules of NaNoWriMo or not...

I'm wanting to know if instead of one 50,000 word story, if I could write three 10,000 word stories that are seemingly unconnected, and then a 20,000 word story that ties them all together. Now obviously word counts are just an approximation and nothing definite. All would feature the same character, but would seem like a collection of short stories about the character. Then the final story would reveal that everything had been leading up to some giant climax.

I would do this as just one story, but I think it would feel too spastic. I think having the actual story breaks, with separate titles and chapter counts, would give the feeling to the reader that these are all totally separate events that seemingly have little to do with one another.

Again, I didn't know if anthologies are frowned upon...

I don't think anything is frowned upon in NaNoWriMo. Try checking out the NaNo Rebel forum board for a good idea of the different sorts of stories being written. For my sake, I think that sounds like an interesting idea! It definitely sounds do-able, so if you want to do it, go right ahead!

Eight lords sleeping till it’s foretold
By an old hand they will be stirred
One a tree that’s grown too old
One a sound that’s never been heard
One a shade that hasn’t a caster
One a light been swallowed by a bird
One hangs like a ghost in the sky

Nikoli,

Sounds like a perfectly valid idea to me! The only thing we frown upon is writing intentional goobleydgook simply for the sake of making word counts faster than anyone else. And even then, it's only because you're cheating yourself out of the opportunity to get a novel written. The purpose of NaNo is not to race, but to write. And it sounds like you're going to be inventing a new style of writing, so you're all good!

I know from the fanfiction realm, I have seen quite a few fanfic writers write several short stories. In a way, I consider it parts. You know like in Anne Rice books, several of them like Lestat The Vampire and Pandora are actually split into a few major parts. It all connects together in the end.
