So, my MC, (formerly a secondary character, but whatever,) is wandering around in this big, unexplored cavern where he got trapped. Things lurk down here, especially a big, malevolent darkness that will get him somewhere around the end of chapter two. maybe three. Maybe even later. The problem is, what else is down there? You know, the monsters under the bed. Something he can fight with, something that can shatter his confidence, make him realize it is actually scary underground even if you CAN see in the dark, etc. I'm clueless. He needs to fight with, and defeat, a few scary things that lurk in the dark before being defeated and captured in his turn. It should be a no brainer but I am having a hard enough time with the plot as it is, I just can't think of anything!

He is likely to be eaten by a grue...

Sorry, had to say it. If you don't get it, look it up.

Things that go bump in the night... hmmm....

Rats, Bats, Sentient globs of Ooze, Mutant Creatures, Minotaurs, Cyclopses, Those dogs with Three Heads - the name escapes me right now, Hydra, duergar, Various giant lizards, spiders, dark elves/drow, sverfneblin, trolls, giant man eating worms. And any number of other things, including the aforementioned grue.

What the good gents above said!

And for your consideration, is there anything your MC is scared of? Something from his past? Something real or maybe just the idea of something?

A pre-existent fear now realized in the isolated darkness could overwhelm his logic sensors and provide great tension.

Let me know how it goes.

Cerberus was the three-headed dog somebody else mentioned.

You might consider vampires, ghosts, evil wizards also like darkness. With the evil wizard idea you could have all sorts of fun with illusions and mind-games. Also, banshees, maybe?

Some misleading ghost lights that lead him to pitfalls and generally dangerous cave terrain. Maybe the lights come from a source (ghost, witch, ect) that has to be killed to stop them.

Ha! I love that movie!

Okay, how about this?

"From behind them came a menacing growl. Rolf turned around slowly and found himself staring into eyes that glinted in the light of his torch. The beast blinked once, then licked his fangs eagerly. Rolf stared in horror and took a single step backwards. Then the wolf leapt.
Rolf threw up his arms and fell backwards, the torch flying into the crater where it went out. The cavern was plunged into darkness. The roaring of the waterfall was accented by the snarls of the world, the screams of the woman, and the cries of the fire-born who was loosing his battle. "

Of course he gets away from it, one of his more quick thinking companions throws some rocks at it. Next we'll have something slimy. hehehe. This is fun.

,

I was just thinking that and you went and you went and beat me to it.

Anyway, malevolent shadows! Entities made out of darkness that are alive. Other than that, I agree with what everyone else said.
