Much to my delight this Monday I woke up feeling terrible, but went to school anyway. I ended up going home at 12 o'clock and am currently dying due to some unknown flu-type thing. As a result of this, I'm behind on schoolwork (even more than I was to begin with....) and have lost all motivation to write!

It's soul destroying in a way!

Anyone else been swamped with illness?

I was just getting ready to start a thread about this! XD

I had a tickle in my throat and a cough for the last few days and now I have the fever and cough bit going on today. I work at Subway, so I'm in contact with people all day and I'm 99% sure this is H1N1, but the doctor's office is so swamped with other sick people that they don't want people with H1N1 to come in. Go figure XD

I'm still going to brute force it through NaNo, though! And I'm trying to figure out things that will help me feel better enough to keep writing, even though I just want to lay in bed and throw a pity party for myself.

Thing to Keep Me (and You!) Going:

1. Hot tea with lemon or honey (So very soothing!)
2. Comfy pillows on my computer chair
3. Soup (preferably chicken noodle, but any will do!)
4. Classical or instrumental music (2002 is an amazing instrumental group--I can fall right asleep to their music!)
5. Ice cream/milkshakes

If anyone else can think of more, please feel free to add them! And I hope everyone ill now gets to feeling better! :D :D

I was at my parents' house for the weekend where my mom was coming down with a cold. By early Monday, my wife had begun to come down with it, and sure enough I feel the telltale scratchiness of postnasal drip. 'Tis only a matter of time. Not the flu, though, fortunately.

Ha! I started feel a little sick on Halloween, started puking that night, and didn't stop for 24 straight hours. Not the flu, just some gnarly stomach bug I guess, but it was absolute hell! Poor Nano had to wait. I lost all of Nov 1st, and didn't get started until 3ish yesterday. All better now :)

Thankfully I seem to be immune to the strain of flu my Dad has after suffering with it last nano, and instead am just putting up with earache and constant headaches this year (as a result of said earache). It mostly affected me in the final week of October, and is just now starting to clear.

Last year I found flu aided me in completing nanowrimo. It completely knocked my balance and left me unable to walk for a fortnight. I felt dizzy even when just sitting up. So I lay in bed and just typed every moment I found the energy for eight days until hitting 50k. Then I stopped, and only returned to verify at the end of the month.

Yes.

Fever, aches, sniffling and sneezing to no end, etc. It's awful. I still am going to class and trying to keep up with everything, but it's tough. I have drunk a million cups of tea the past few days.

But I think I'm getting better!

I'm not a doctor but here's what I do to stay well:

1) Get more sleep (I know, I know, you're trying to write a novel). But your body will apprciate extra sleep and give it time to rest and recharge.

2) Drink lots of orange juice. Not the concentrated stuff, try Florida Orange or Simply Orange. Orange juice has high levels of natural vitamin C that will help give your immune system a big boost. 8 to 16 ozs a day is enough. If you don't like OJ, try vitamin C pills

3) Try to eat healthier. I know this is the time of year for lots of caffeine and candy and junk. Drinking water is one of the best things for your body!

Hopefully these tips will help keep you healthy. OF course, consult a doctor if symptoms get worse :-)

Oh yeah. I gave myself a cold. Running around/traveling in two wet cold fronts within a week did me in. But it's manageable, and it is sooo not going to hold me back, dangit. I mean, I did last year's with tonsillitis, so there is no way I'm letting a little virus top that.

Unfortunately, it's not very nice to my vocabulary. I resent each and every time my brain falters and I have to go digging for the word I want. >.<

Cough drops, crackers, knock-out cough suppressant syrup, and Benedryl for meeee.

I'm sick with what my mom is sure is the swine flu. I've got a horrible cough and a slight fever, and tomorrow will be my third day of staying home from school :p. I've been sick since Sunday, unfortunately. But luckily, I'm feeling well enough to write and this bout of illness is what has enabled me to keep getting my word count up :). Though tomorrow, it's homework, homework, homework.

I got sick last tuesday with what probably started out as the flu, but has since migrated into bronchitis. That alone makes me pretty fuzzyheaded, but to make matters worse, when I went to the doctor, he gave me an opium based cough medicine that just makes me want to sleep all the time... I've tried caffiene, but I spent most of the day asleep, and I really just want to go to sleep again now.

Any of you other sickies just wanting to put off writing for a day a this point? =.=

I got it too! Around 11 o'clock on Halloween night, as a matter of fact ): Darn mini dress in the beginning of winter....

And, if that wasn't bad enough, two hour a day basketball tryouts (Which I need to go to) started on Monday, are going for three weeks, and our coach is determined to run us to the ground...I've gotten worse, not better, ever since they started.

Yep, sick here. The main effect is that I am having a really hard time keeping my spirits up, or getting enough exercise.

I can tell this one is going to be a bad one.

Ugh, yes. My oldest came down with it on Friday, gave it to his little brother Saturday, and I've been trying to catch it the last couple days now. Fever, aches, cough ... not fun at all.

I am just recovering from a flu-like illness myself. I was hit out of the blue by it last week and I was off work the whole week. I was given some antibiotics and for the first few days I felt like my whole world's going to collapse on top of me or something coz of the headache and coughing and stuffy nose. I still have the cough and my nose still stuffy, but I am feeling much better now than last week -- and just in time too for the start of NaNo! :)

Recovering from something now. Co worker has the dreaded swine flu and is in quarantine but mine (hopefully) is a cold, since I had swine flu once already a couple of months ago. In all honesty, this cold thing hung around longer than swine flu. I was lucky with that, since I have respiratory problems to start with.
All I have left is this persistent cough and one last Tamiflu pill to take. Just in case.

The flu? Nope! I've managed to avoid it so far (pauses to rap on the side of my head). Knock on wood. But I did have a rather stubborn cold over the weekend that lasted from Friday night until around late Monday afternoon. If that's the worst that happens to me, I'll consider myself lucky.

Yeap, I had been feeling bad for all of last week and apparently my body decided it hates me so I'm now dealing with a flu-like illness. I'm still typing, though. I don't know how much of it is going to make sense, but I can see that my writing's still as dialogue-heavy as it's always been and it's pretty okay so far.

Wishing you all well!

I have been sick throughout NaNo this year, and yeah, it definitely sucks. The first day I did it, I could not stop coughing for anything. Still having the problem. It's not so much fun trying to write about characters and how they're feeling when you really only want to complain about how you can't stop gagging because the cough won't go away.
Much lameness.

Well, thankfully I'm not sick at the moment. I've had a cold for... oh, I dont' know, the last month. Literally, it started on October 3rd, and then didn't go away until two days ago.

Thankfully, I was considered a 'high risk' group for H1N1, and was able to wait in line to get a vaccine earlier last month. But I haven't gotten my regular flu vaccine yet.

I hope everyone who is sick feels better soon! (((hugs)))

I've been coughing pretty hard the past few days, so I stayed home today from school. I hope this doesn't last long, as I really don't want to be behind in my homework.

I got sick yesterday, when I didn't have school because it was Election Day, but I'm still sick today and I've stayed home from school. My facebook status yesterday was actually "I'm sick and I feel disgusting, but I'm sitting here dutifully writing my novel. What now, b*tch." XD

Apparently I got the cold my sister's had for the past month yesterday. Fortunately not the flu, but it still kind of sucks. Stuffy nose all of yesterday, better today since I took allergy medicine, but now I'm starting to get a cough as well. And this morning my head felt oddly weighted, perhaps because of sinus congestion or something, then I spent most of the day trying not to fall asleep in class. So far this is sort of sapping my desire to write, but I'm hoping it will come back soon.

So one possible benefit of being sick (I'm starting to develop something, right now just a fever and a terrible need to pee like every ten seconds) ... if you like me are a person who, when you get sick, find yourself having to go to the bathroom frequently (though only God knows WHY), you can make it into a writing challenge! Don't let yourself go 'til you've written another thousand or so words ... nothing says "word sprint" like having to go to potty! lol

My mouth has been pretty dry the last few days, I started coughing around seven this morning and a headache and the chills came on around two in the afternoon (pretty sure it's the swine flu). I went straight to bed after getting home from school at about 4:30, slept 'till 7:30, went to bed again at nine, and haven't been able to sleep since 1:30ish AM. Now I sit here in my unventilated 10x8x7 foot room in the basement, fan rattling beside me in an attempt to get the air swirling, not wanting to do anything at all.
'Course, reading about everybody else's problems and how they're all still gonna write makes me feel kinda guilty, so I'm off now to force myself to continue writing.
(PS: hope I don't get better for two or so more days--my sleeping schedule, if I had one to begin with, has been horrendously messed up, and I will fall asleep in class if I have to go to school before I straighten it out).

Got the flu this week, probably of the swine variety since that's what's going around, but whatever. It's just the regular flu. I don't see why people are getting SO panicked about it. Yes, people have died from it, but people die from the regular flu all the time as well.

I'm just happy that my calling it "the plague" has rubbed off on, like, half my friends.

Unfortunately, no. I think being sick would be a great opportunity to get more writing done (I'm the kind of sick person that gets out of bed anyway and does stuff), but my immune system just won't let that happen! I've had several sick friends and I've done everything possible to try to get their germs and come down with something, but the most I've got is the tiniest of coughs and a stuffy nose!

Funny how reading through this thread made my throat start itching... I'm a freaking hypochondriac. :P

No flu here, but I'm afraid a mild depression is coming over, for some reason. I'm gonna try chase it away by doing exercise and swimming. Helped today.
