Hey guys, since on the front page it's declared that today is Back Up Your Novel Day, I thought I'd find out what other people are doing to keep their files alive and well in case something goes wrong.
My plan is three fold. First, it's saved on my Acer Aspire One Netbook. Second, it's saved to an SD card that I leave in the computer. And finally, at the end of every significant writing period I copy it onto a thumb drive.

I forgot about my SD card.
Mine's saved to the computer, a flash drive, I printed out a copy yesterday... and I've just now saved to my SD card.

DropBox, Google Docs, and I need to add my flashdrive to the mix. I should get a card for my netbook, too, but they seem so expensive compared to flashdrives.

Well first, I have it saved like usual.
Second, I've emailed the file to myself.
Third, In case the file I emailed to myself for some reason gets something wrong with it, I've copy-and-pasted the entire text of my novel into the body of my email.
And fourth, I searched through my room until I found my old, absolutely miniscule, never-before-been-used flash drive, and copied it onto that as well. It's living in my pocket.

First, I have Word set up so F12 saves with one press (rather than the default Save As behavior it comes with). I save to my desktop roughly every other time I hit the period key. Sometimes more often.
Second, I'm publishing a blog alongside. Every week, a 5k block of unedited story gets published. In reality, though, I "schedule" a post every time I hit the 5k word barrier, so my story will live in entirety on the server long before I've posted part 10 of 10.
I'd put it on a thumb drive, but then I'd either lose the drive or forget which copy is more up-to-date, the desktop or the thumb drive. That, and a thumb drive would tempt me to work on my laptop, too. Bad idea ... I need a break every now and then :-)

I saved an RTF copy, as well as a zipped archive of my Scrivener file onto a thumb drive, as well as emailing the RTF copy (the only part I REALLY need) to myself.

I would suggest that if any of you have a Hotmail or Live email address, you should try their Skydrive. It comes with the free email account and offers *25 gigs* of online storage space. You can choose to either share or keep your document folder private or "locked". I find it much more flexible that Google Docs because you aren't limited in the type of file you upload. You can work in your word processor of choice and just browse for the file and upload it to your Skydrive. It is accessible whenever you log on to your MSN Hotmail / Live account.

Save frequently during writing session.
At end of session save and also do a Save As and save a copy in plain text (in case the .doc file got corrupted.)
Zip the .doc and the .txt and email the .zip to myself at my Gmail. Loads of storage space there!
Copy all the files to my USB stick, which goes everywhere with me.
Never let me down so far!

I save my files to Dropbox as well as an additional .rtf file every time I hit another 5k words. Also, I save my progress to Google Wave. Other than that, nothing. I think my novel is safe for now.

At the end of each day, I compile a draft in Scrivener and upload the RTF file to Google docs. If something should happen to my MacBook (and I will probably have nightmares tonight from having even typed out that thought) I need my novel in a format that I can access with the PCs in the house. I also put a copy of the RTF file on a thumb drive so I can write on my netbook (running Windows) during my lunch hour.

I use Dropbox, which has the neat feature of keeping folders on all my different Macs synced. However, if I accidentally delete a file on one of the computers, the file is gone on all. Luckliy, Dropbox keeps previous versions of files, so I can find those online in most cases. Additionally, I do a backup with Mozy, send an archive of the Scrivener file every couple of days or so to my e-mail account and keep a copy on a thumb drive. Once a month or so, I update an external harddrive with my documents, and keep this in a fireproof locker in a from my computers.
So I should be ok. :)

I switch between an Ubuntu netbook and Windows 7 desktop. To keep my files synced I use SpiderOak (www.spideroak.com). No matter where I work, it gets synced to the other computer. I also have online access when I am away from either computer. I like that I can keep my documents in the folder structure they are in and not dump it in a central folder.
I also have a spare 200GB IDE hard drive I bought an external enclosure for and use that for all my backups. I also like to keep hard copies in a file folder...just in case.

Sent it to three different email accounts, google docs, and a hard copy (on paper in a binder). The last one's a bit of a waste of paper and time (since I try to "save" paper by printing it double sided, but I'm not sure how to make the printer do it, so I do it page by page :S), but its also more portable since I don't have access to a computer while at school.
