There's a problem with the Author Search facility. Many of us aren't showing up at all as belonging to the Africa: South Africa region, let alone even being registered for Nano.
However ... according to the Tech Help forum, there is a solution.
If you go in and change your home region to none, then go back and change your home region to what it should be - you will then start showing up in the search list by location.
I tried this and, voila, I'm listed. Maybe, given my lowly word count, I shouldn't have bothered.
At least now you know what to do if you want to find who your closest rival *cof* friend, is.

PS: ML's are warned not to do this as it will screw up something else.
What fun we have during the Nano teething stage!

My closest rival sits across the room from me and gives me carrots in terms of word count.
But I am proud of him. :-D He is wonderful motivation.

Adding South Africa to your location also helps. That enables us all to search for South Africa, and see how everyone is doing.
On the whole I think the site is holding up really well. I seem to remember that last year the seach function was shut down completely for the first week, and the site crashed several times. The fancy new system they have this year seems to be working well. A few glitches I can live with.
