Tammers suggested in the "Editing in November" thread that it might be kosher to include notes to ourselves as part of our word count. Can anybody point to a place in the FAQ (or elsewhere) that states this? That would be pretty useful, as I could just highlight all of my text to do a word count (instead of de-selecting all the random bits in brackets sprinkled throughout my novel).
Thanks for your pointer, Tammers. No surprise here, but the Ithaca community is looking pretty down to earth and supportive.

I think the rules about Nanowrimo are pretty flexible. I think short notes in the middle of your text, like, "Here is the scene where such and such happens," would count toward your word count, since they're standing in for much longer scenes, and they're only a few words anyway. But I don't think long outlines and things like would probably count, especially if they're from pre-planning in October. I think it might be a personal judgment call. You could always just aim to 51k just to be sure.
