Here's the deal, ladies and gents: We're at Borders on Friday night (6:00 PM-10:30 PM, table in the back), and we're unsure about the outlet situation. Even if we were sure on the outlet situation, we'd be uneasy having snakes of wires leading every which way for some unsuspecting Borders customer to trip over.

So, this is what we're asking: If you've got an iffy laptop battery (and don't want to write by hand), join us right here, online, from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM on Friday (November 6) for the Friday night Write-In. We're going to run it online the way we run it in person. There'll be a period to get comfy, then a period of timed writing (20 minutes or more), then a break (5 or 10 minutes), and then writing again. I'll also be running a version of this on twitter. You can find me here:

www.twitter.com/francis_grey

We don't want to exclude anyone from joining in, but we have to take into account space and outlet constraints, so we decided to give a virtual write-in a whirl. If you have ideas on how to make the virtual write-in better, drop a note!

I'll be a virtual person. Uh, one possible though would be to use a messenger system and have (essentially) a giant chat party that isn't as slow as forum posting. It'd be good for socializing time (let the virtual people get their kicks in per say) and make easier conversation all around.

Stuff like AIM or MSN.

Nano does have a IRC chat set up we could join there and make our own room, or as Geo suggested the AIM/yahoo/MSN chat set up :)

I'm going to set-up a chat room through slashnet.org.

While we do have the NaNo chat, it's a general room for all NaNoers, and through slashnet.org, I can set up a chat just for those of us in SgfMo.

I'll get it up as soon as we get to Borders so that everyone knows what's going on.

I edited this post to reflect that this is now a thread to discuss all Virtual Write In ideas for the region. Also, anyone attending the write in today at Rendezvous, sorry, I woke up late so I'm leaving for there as soon as I finish posting this.

Zahtevnik said that they also have a chat that we could set up for our personal use at http://insomniumgames.com/chat.htm
Nothing is set up for us there now, but we're working that out.

Also, for anyone with a webcam that would like to do a video virtual Write In, we can also set up a chat at Stickam.com
It's a great site and I think it'd make anyone joining in virtually feel like they're more of a part of the write in.

I'll be working remotely for the write-in tonight, but I'll be on closer to 7:00. Where should I report?

I vote for a Stickam chat for tonight, though whatever else we're doing is cool too. Have you guys set up a chatroom already or what?

We'll be at slashnet again, since it's worked well so far and doesn't require people to log in or anything to join. The room will be here:

http://www.slashnet.org/webclient/sgfmo

And it'll go official right on our just after six.

We're gonna write like maniacs tonight, folks! Engage writing hats!

Whoops!

If you're in the virtual write-in and noticed a bunch of us suddenly vanished, it's because slashnet gets cranky if more than three people from the same IP are on at the same time. In laymen's terms: Those of us at Border's who were trying to jump on made slashnet very, very angry. So we got booted.

Keep writing, all you, and keep yourselves motivated! We'll try to hop back in (in lesser numbers), but don't wait for us to keep making your word count awesome!

We have a Stickam chat set up for anyone interested!

Instructions for everyone:

1. Go to www.stickam.com
2. You'll have to make an account, it takes a few seconds. When it asks for "Channel", just pick something.
3. Once you make your account, sign in and then go to "Group Chat" in the top menu.
4. A box of chatroom names will appear, there's a drop down box next to "SORT BY", select to sort by NAME.
5. Find the chatroom "WriSynSGFMo" on the list (we'll be about 3/4ths of the way down) and click "Enter"
6. You'll be prompted to enter a password. Enter "nanowrimo" without the quotes.
7. You're in! Chat to your heart's content!

The chat may not stay up after write ins where we use it. Check back here to find out when we'll be using it again!

We're on stickam again! Took me nearly an hour of trying to get the thing to cooperate with my computer, but the chat is up and running smoothly! If you need help getting in, check out Robert's instructions on the thread. The chat room name and password are the same.

Is anyone else having a problem with the Stickam chatroom? I don't even see it on the list. :-(

Where will we be for this weekend's write-ins? I'm not sure I can make it to any of them, but I would love to participate remotely.

I think I'm going to set up shop at the Mudhouse around 6PM today--Friday Nov. 20--for anyone who lives close to downtown but can't make it to the Border's write-in, or doesn't want to worry about that outlet situation. If anyone wants to join me, you're more than welcome to, and I'll likely be there early.

I've got a cute little white netbook, so if you see it, you know I'm probably there. :D Just sit down and say hi! If it's not me, this is a great opportunity to make a new friend, anyway!

...for some reason, my computer thinks it's Saturday...

EDIT:
I'm at the Mudhouse! A little early, but I'm ready to write. I'm sitting at a table with a square, striped lamp if anyone has plans to join up so we can have a write-in at the same time as the others!
