I was just finishing up a 3,000 word stretch of writing, and when i went to SAVE i got an error message saying my Open Office Writer couldn't write the file. I panicked, opened a new document and pasted it all in there, then quickly emailed it to myself. I am thanking my lucky stars that I actually remembered to do that, because not five seconds later i got another error message saying that Open Office had CRASHED and my file might not be recovered.
I don't think I can ever trust my word processor again. Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do? It seems to be working fine now, but I really don't want to take any chances!

Ooh, good idea! I don't need anything fancy, just text.

I've had Open Office Writer crash on me in the middle of writing important school papers so many times, it's stopped being a frustration, haha. Luckily, most of the time the recovery manager DOES restore my document exactly as it was before it crashed--although that may be because of how often I have Open Office autosave and the fact that I usually hit ctrl+s at the end of every sentence I write as a precaution. xD
So far, I've had my word processor do one really scary crash (and this is a processor that doesn't have a recovery manager), but I was smart and backed my novel up to Google Docs, so I only had to rewrite a few sentences. Good on you for backing yours up so quickly! I'd hate for you to have to rewrite. D:

Yeah, it came back to me. It's a new program for me, i had no idea it was going to do that! As long as i'm as careful as you are i should probably be fine.

Wow. That's distressing. I've never had OO crash on me at random. I've lost files when power went out, but never had a real crash. Hope you get your program fixed. And huge props for saving your work!

I was not so lucky. I woke up this morning to find my OO had lost most of my story! Despite the autosave, I went from 5335 words last night to only 1745 words this morning! Two days worth of work gone!

Anyone looking for something more reliable than Open Office but more exciting that Wordpad or Notepad, try Rough Draft: http://www.salsbury.f2s.com/rd.htm It's like a baby version of MS Word. But you can't change the language so it's stuck in American English. I love this programme, you can even tab documents in one window! It has a setting for writing fiction as well.
Commiserations to everyone who's lost work to Open Office *hugs and e-cookies for all*

That's never happened to me, but thanks for the 411. I just pasted a version into Google Docs to be sure.

OpenOffice has crashed on me a few times, last night I lost a ton of work. I've decided to stop working on my laptop and send everything to my linux desktop, which tends to crash less and have better recovery.

Word works really well for me, so I don't have a lot of problems. My laptop has a really fiddly power supply too, and the battery wore out ages ago, so at any given time my computer could just shut off randomly. I love programs like Firefox and Word that save your information at times like this, it has saved my butt so many times.

Anything really has the potential to crash. Just gotta be careful and take your precautions really. But thank god that you were lucky enough!
