Click on "regional info" and you'll see what I mean. Or download a widget.

DO NOT PUT WIDGETS IN YOUR .SIG (signature) FILE. Please.
Even if you see other people doing it. Widgets weren't turned on originally because they are a huge drain on the server, and if they have to be uploaded (and updated) on every single post people make, it REALLY slows down the website. The little bar by your name on each post is essentially a perma-widget, anyway.

That said, put them on your own webpage, put them on a facebook/Live Journal/Myspace page, put them on a page you create that sits on your server that only you see... they're fun, and they allow you to see your progress if you're going for a larger-than 50K goal, as well.

All for the increased silliness and joy...

Am I missing something about how to find the widgets? I click on regional info, but don't see anything about widgets or different from what it was like before.

The word counts at the far right -- comparing our word count to that of Italy, Perth, Salem, etc. -- should show up as graphics now. Bars, like the one that shows your progression of word count on each post. Before today it was just a list of places, (at least on my browser.)

To get a widget of your own, go up to "fun stuff" on the main menu and drop down to widgets. You'll see a few examples on that page, plus the info on how to set them up.

I don't understand how they work, either. I get how you could put them on your webpage, but it says you can put it on Facebook, etc., but not how to do that. Anyway have a clue?

Basically, it's the same as placing any graphic; you use the image source tag in html with the link to the widget. It "calls" the info about your wordcount, and the image, from the NaNo website.

I did make the assumption that people could add html to Facebook pages; I haven't tried to do that. I know you can do it on Live Journal.

If that makes absolutely no sense to you, maybe we could talk tomorrow?

I have no idea on where you would be able to put the widget on a Facebook page. If anyone else has figured it out, I would appreciate directions on how to do it

K-Koira: I was able to post a widget directly into my news feed. Just copy the source code into your news feed, here is mine:

I hope that makes sense : )

There's a facebook app that imports your wordcount directly from the site and posts it to your wall every time it changes. It keeps a graph, too, though you have to look for it under 'boxes' for that. Pretty sure it's just called "NaNoWriMo".

Thanks, all. I just put Nanowrimo into the Facebook search and found the application and a couple of groups. And I forgot to take the angle brackets out.

Thank you! I'm pretty much a facebook neophyte myself.

No. They're "off" again. And the website was totally down a little bit ago.
