Anyone else out there trying to keep up with the word count while tending to children? I have a 14-month-old who demands great amounts of attention, and I am finding it difficult to get a few peaceful moments to write.

I have a beautiful, yet demanding little two year old girl, who never lets me sit for longer than two seconds without asking for something, or wanting to play a new game with me.
I also work evenings, which is a nightmare, as this is the time I find my creative flow in full force!
I'm usually up untill early hours of the morning writing, and then up again with the little one at 8.
Once I'm home from work, little one is settled down in bed and I'v had a nice cup of tea I find once I start I cant stop. Hence the early morning bed times!
Also meal times are fantastic, as she doesnt eat at the same time as me due to my silly working hours, so when shes sat all quiet munching away I have a nice little sit down with the laptop and type away!

I have a 1 month old baby! I've gotten very good at typing one-handed while bouncing/patting/nursing.

Unfortunately his fussy time (evenings) coincides with my noveling time - and my husband is doing nano too! So we take turns, one of us tending to the baby and the other typing away. So far our word count hasn't suffered too much, but it helps that I'm not back to work yet!

I have a two year old and a four year old. I wait until they have gone to bed to start writing. It would be impossible to get anything done when they're awake.

My eldest is in school and I've found myself going on long walks with the youngest in the buggy and working on my plot ideas in my head whilst walking. I think I've got most of my best bits during the walks!

Me. In fact, there are quite a few of us. We had a whole thread going about this in the 30s and 40s forum.

I have three. The older two are homeschooled, and the youngest is 2 and constantly in need of attention. Her favorite game is climbing up on the chair next to mine and then climbing into my lap. It's very cute, and I get delightful hugs that way (and that's usually her only goal, so it's hard to mind), but it does get in the way of typing.

I just don't write when I'm the only adult home with them. Fortunately, my husband is very supportive. When he's home, he spends a lot of time "on duty" so I can close the door and write. And "on duty" doesn't just mean being available for the kids; he does meals and folds laundry and whatever else needs to be done. I couldn't do this without his participation.

That said, I'm probably going to cheat a little tomorrow, and try to squeeze in a little time while he's at work. I'm not likely to make my goal tonight, and if I wait until he gets home, I probably won't be able to make up enough words tomorrow night. I have a secret stash of cool stuff to pull out for times like these (toys and projects the kids haven't seen yet), and there's a convenient window seat in the playroom where I can sit with my laptop. I won't be as efficient as when I'm all by myself at my desktop, but I think I need the time to catch up.

I have 3 boys - 7, 5 and 3. And a baby girl due anytime (hint hint baby - time to come out). The boys have been going to bed earlier so I can write after they sleep. I'm just a bit behind, so I want to do some catching up on my hubby's days off (he works weekends). Oh and hubby cooks, and I can get laundry help if needed. The rest of the house I swear they don't notice unless its on fire! (Even though they help when I ask/insist, sometimes I wish I didn't have to be in charge you know?)

My older boys are homeschooled too, but we are taking it easy this month since the baby is due. We school year round.

Nice to meet everyone!

Amy--I hear you on the "wish I didn't have to always be in charge" thing! Mine will do all sorts of tasks, some on his own initiative, but if I want to be sure something isn't missed, I have to leave a list. Of course, sometimes things still don't get done, but that's also true at times when I'm in charge.

We school year-round, too, but we already took it easy last month while we were moving, so I can't relax too much right now.

You're doing NaNo with a baby due? Wow, that's dedication!

I agree! I was not in the writing mood in my last months of pregnancy with any of my kids.

I had been writing in the mornings while they watched a bit of PBS Kids and then ate breakfast, but I got messed up on Thursday and am now on a night cycle. Two of the kids are in bed but the third little monkey, one of my 3yo twins, went and took a nap today on his own and is now literally hanging off my back. He wont crash out for a couple more hours most likely. Hence why I usually don't nap the twins anymore. *sigh*

The weekend is going to be my challenge. Everyone in the house is going to want something from me non-stop from the 3yo twins to the 34yo husband. I am hoping to escape to a write-in on Sunday, but we'll see if that actuallly happens. I guess I'm on a night cycle for weekends, but I hope to hit a morning cycle again on Monday.
