I'd be interested in seeing anyone else's novels if they're online. I know there's a post already for NaNoWriMo blogging in general, but I'm talking specifically about reading a novel online as they're written.

My own novel is being posted up bit-by-bit on my blog,
http://bibliothecadiscordia.wordpress.com/
If anyone wants to stop by and have a look - comments on my novel segments are welcome!

Things are going badly for the Elemental Squad, the police force of the magical world. There's a Dark Lord on the rise, and everyone is too concerned with personal prestige to work together.
Kelly is thirteen. Her parents are in the Elemental Squad, so she's well placed to see how everything is going to hell. Determined to help somehow, Kelly finds a book in the Elemental Squad library that she thinks might be useful... and ends up accidentally summoning the Necromancer, the only true Master of Necromancy ever to have existed, and a powerful Dark Lord in her own right.
As though things weren't bad enough before, the Elemental Squad now has to deal with a cheerful, chaotic, and surprisingly helpful Necromancer, who's taken an inexplicable and rather worrying shine to Kelly.
The rising Dark Lord might turn out to be the least of their problems...

I was wondering this exact thing myself. I also saw the post about blogging about NaNoWriMo but most of the people seem to be writing about their novels, as opposed to publishing it as they go along. I'm trying to do both:

http://www.machwerx.com
http://www.machwerx.com/writings/jumpgate-blues

Mine's a science fiction story about a jumpgate pilot with a very stressful work environment. Feel free to read it, but I suspect most people here are focused more on their own writing than reading other people's works. But I am curious what people do with their novels if not publish them online.

Also, I'm using WordPress and I decided to use a page instead posts. A single large page is easier to read than trying to scroll up and down through multiple posts, especially for people that don't frequently read your blog.

I just set this thing up. Don't know if it works or not.

I don't think I'll have time to actually finish nano this year, but last year I started nano and published my chapters on www.fictionpress.com but I didn't put up all the chapters from last year's nano, although I do have two finished stories on there from way before I even knew about nano.

I'm www.fictionpress.com/~shadowgirl618 if you want to check it out.

WARNING!!!! If you all are just writing your novels for fun, go ahead and put them online, but if you think you might EVER want to sell the novel, do not put it up on a public site. You are risking your right of first publication if you do. Most publishers are only interested in being the first to publish a story. If it has already been published (ANY public posting counts as published), they will not have any interest in the story. If you are going to try to get a piece of your work published, never post more than brief excerpts of it on any public forum. FYI and FWIW. That's how the business works.

Good luck and write on.

Best,
SharonID

To qualify what SharonID's said:

If you post excerpts for a critique, say, online behind a password, i.e., it's a member site/page that you can only access once you've logged in, you're fine. It's blocked from the general public and won't be cached or accessed by Google or spiders trolling the net.

Thank you Sharon and Ben for the information. It's something I never really thought about but it makes sense. I'm doing this mostly for fun so I'll keep on posting it publicly. From a mathematical perspective, my expected number of readers via my blog would be "my blog readership" x "% of them that might read a novel I wrote". But my expected number of readers via an outside publisher would be "the probability of getting published" x "number of people that would read my novel". My guess is that the former number is about 5 and the latter number is about 0... =)

But it's good to know for other people that were actually thinking about trying to get their novels published.

Hey, I'm also putting my novel up online. It's going up on my livejournal. And I realize that it will harm my chances of ever getting it published by a good publisher, but I'm mainly writing this one for fun.

What counts as a brief except?

I now have one of about 500 words, and one of about 200.

You should be fine with those. It's when you start posting entire chapters or decide to seralize the novel that potential agents and publishers might take a pass.

Yeah. There is a ebook publisher that's doing it. http://www.smashwords.com/
They have a Nanowrimo link at the top left. I've got mine set up to be free, but they let you convert your book into several formats, and you can either set it free, for a price, or have the buyer decide how much they want to pay. I'm planning on making it free at least until it's done. Then maybe adding a price (or pay how much they want) when its edited/polished.

I'm posting excerpts for my novel up on my blog (linked in my signature and profile), and when it's done I'll be dropping the document into a wave on Google Wave and inviting people in so that they can help me edit it (since it's limited access and I won't be posting the final draft I figure it'll be fine :P)

Since I'm a novice teen writer, I don't plan on getting it (or anything else) published. At least not for a few years.

So I'm going to post the whole thing on fictionpress once it's done. It's a great site, IMO. A lot of amazing works are up on there.

My ID is glaringdream. (:

The chances of my novel getting published in the real world are pretty slim.
I won't publish it online, but I'll probably upload it to Lulu, and get my very own hard copy.
That is, after I spend months editing it.

I'm planning on self-publishing, so I think I'll only be uploading a few chapters and that's about it. Just kind of worried about people trying to sell my book if I publish the whole thing online, haha!

Since my second novel is copyrighted and a lot of content is pulled from that (i.e. the entire world), I don't have to worry about someone stealing it (because then I can sue). I've only got the first chapter on novel 2 up. I have the first 2 chapters on Lunamae (because they are shorter).

It helps being a graphic/web designer. The software I used to make my flipping pages is from here: http://page-flip.com/. They have an HTML edition that's customizable. Might be worth checking out.

My second novel this year is about NaNo, and I plan on putting it up online piece by piece in December after a brief reread for consistencies and of course, spell check.

I am not planning on publishing (oh, I will get a copy for myself through lulu - and maybe self publish the same way, but I doubt it is good enough :) )

And, this is my first attempt at writing a novel anyway! so why not?

Hey, I was starting to put mine online, but no one was reading it, so I stopped, but I could continue if you'd like to read it. It's at http://synergeticnovel.willowrise.com/
I'm just about to start reading yours, too. It's nice to find someone else who is interested in sharing their's online!

I was thinking about it, but I may just put up some excerpts instead, in case my end result is actually worth publishing, heh.
