Just throwing this idea out there, because my friend just wrote to me from Portland with one of the coolest ideas ever!

"Portland is doing an interesting thing. Apparently, Seattle has a tradition of, when a Nanoer goes out to write, they carry with them a duck. Then anyone doing Nanowrimo who sees a person on a laptop with a duck beside them knows they are a fellow Nanoer and can come up and get to know other writers in the area. So we're doing it, but since University of Oregon's mascot is a duck, and Oregon State Uni folks refuse to use one (major rivalry, Ducks versus Beavers), we decided to go with Plot Bunnies! Some folks are crocheting them, others just bringing whatever stuffed bunny they have. I have a Bun Bun from the
comic "Sluggy Freelance," a homicidal mini lop who carries a switch blade (no one's sure where he hides it). So that is my plot bunny."

That being said, I think it would be SO much fun if we Rochester folk came up with some sort of way to identify ourselves in various settings. Something less obvious than a sign that reads that we're NaNoing would be a lot of fun! I bet a lot of us NaNo together in different places and don't even realize it! That, and the thought of multitudes of (rubber ducks/bunnies/etc) lined up in public places while we NaNo absolutely tickles me!

I've only been living in Rochester (and NY) for the past 5 years, so I'll leave the ideas for what we could use up to the natives. :)

I love this idea!!! ..Mostly because i already have a rubber ducky :P I also have a few other stuffed animals somewhere (a beanie baby wolf for instance) but i would love to do something like this... i would suggest maybe a tiger, cuz it's RIT's mascot, but I know some of you don't like RIT, or never went there, and those tigers at their bookstore are stinkin' expensive :P I'd be up for doing a rubber ducky, cuz like i said i have one and they're relatively cheap.............. (and i'm originally from Oregon :P )

That is a cool idea. Plot bunnies or ducks would be cool. But, at the meetup, if I remember right, Vedesca passed out Plot Ninjas. I don't know what else anyone has in mind, or what other animal might represent Rochester-maybe an elephant or another animal from the zoo?

Plot Ninjas would be awesome! I only hope she has some left over because I didn't make it to the meet-up :(

Not sure if I'll get a chance to write out and about this year, but the plot ninjas would be awesome to have standing next to a laptop (or notebook) while writing. I still have mine from a few years ago, a bright orange guy. (he even moonlights in an LJ icon I use sometimes).

I think since we should all just use a flower. You know, a pretty flower from the craft store. Set it by your notebook it won't be too obvious and someone who does not know about nano won't think you're a nut.

The few ninjas left went out as prizes at the kick-off, but now I know I need to buy more! I don't even think I have one. In this year's goodie bags there were sticky inner editors that you could chuck about the room in anger :)

A flower could work, as we are the "flower city." I think everyone could get a hold of a small rubber duck fairly easily, or something pirate or ninja inspired. This sounds like a great and fun idea!

I'd suggest Lilacs, but seeing how it's almost winter... yeah.
But You could probably find fake ones, or draw them, which is what I would do. (Probably with crayon, since I'm odd like that)

I'll be bringing my Devil Ducky! I've had him since my first trip out here in....2001ish? I got him from a store that's no longer open on Monroe Ave. We used to travel cross-country from So. Cali to Rochester to work during summers :) I would've loved a plot ninja, though :)

Plot ninjas are a bit small to spot easily...
My zombie duck shall accompany me henceforth. Come and say hi if you spot us!!

So is there going to be a universal for all of us, or a different on per meet up? I like the fake (or real) flower idea. I wasnt at the last meet up to get a ninja.

Is anyone doing this? I think the flower is a good idea, so if I write anywhere but home, from now on I'll bring a flower :)
