I'm pledging myself to something very eccentric. I'm going for 50K by 3:00 PM on Nov. 20.
Reasons: I want very badly to win 2009 NANO, with a worthwhile novel (as I thought 2007's was, except that in two years I've lost some copies and what I retained wasn't complete). Then I just discovered, or realized, this afternoon that the three older grandkids have not 4, but 9 days total, vacation from school for Tgiving: Nov. 21 – Nov. 29. Well, that's a potential loss of 9 days' Writing Time, as it's difficult to Write in a household of 5 adults and 5 children, ages 11 months to 10 years, and my only computer is a reconditioned desktop in my daughter's living room. The children's bedtime is 8 PM, so no computer use after that; and I usually try to escape to my separate quarters when they arrive home at 3:15, as my babysitting day (which begins at 7 AM on weekdays and 5 AM on weekends) is usually over. I may have to start (THE HORROR! THE HORROR!) writing in my bedroom, in illegible longhand. (O please O Writing Angels, deliver me from that!)
I don't have a working laptop so couldn't participate in a write-in, don't have transportation, and babysit all day 7 days a week. Whee! So my determination must be cranked up to Intense to do this. I will.

sounds awesome! You can DO THIS!
Oh, and just so you know, lack of tech isn't a barrier to write-ins. I only got a laptop last year! I used to handwrite at them.

I wish you the best. I think I'd still try to work in maybe 15-30 minutes of writing even on those days you think you can't or shouldn't. Even a LITTLE bit of time, repeated often, adds up to a LOT. BTW--if you find any creative tricks to pull off this effort, please share! Kelly

Also, if you give me some advance notice, I can bring you a laptop to use at a write-in if it's an event that I can attend. Kelly

My handwriting is so illegible! I take notes at night, when I can't sleep; sometimes I even write poetry that way, and when I'm reading I transcribe great quotes plus the title and author's name. Then the next day I try to type that in the computer and can't read it lol.
Well, something about that goal-setting must have worked! I got up this morning at 4 AM to babysit, 3 hours early, and I surpassed 25K just before noon or so, in the late morning anyway.
My reward is to spend the rest of the day with the new Stephen King, UNDER THE DOME, which I received yesterday from the Local Library on Reserve; I read 140+ pp. last night and had to force myself to quit and go to sleep.

and I've made it: 50387 NaNoWriMo validated at 1 PM, Nov. 17: 3 days, 2 hours early.
Kicker is: I'm probably not even halfway through the Novel: my heroine is just now (as of today) on her final day in her original home location, and I still have to get her through the move out-of-state and on to THE IMPORTANT STUFF
(smile)
But I'm lovin' it. I finally stopped worrying and I' m in a celebratory mood. After 17 hours babysitting yesterday and 7 hours of sleep, I could use a break. Time to READ and relax and take up the trowel tomorrow. Hmm, maybe I'll find a place for the TSoD even.

Fantastic! You should be so proud of yourself. Everyone that has reached their goal should pat themselves on the back, they deserve it.
