...what sort of crimes would you consider to be punishable by secret death? I'm going for things that could be construed as bad, but don't really deserve execution, hence they're being carried out behind closed doors, so to speak. Treason's an obvious one, but treason he can prove can be done in the streets and celebrated by the people. The more specific the better:)

Sedition! Badmouthing the monarch.

Anyways as for the OP... ever heard of a man who goes by the name of Uncle Stalin or the other guy Mein Fuhrer? They're the best sources for disappearing acts and other such magic tricks. Their best accomplishments were magic tricks that were associated with race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, political leaning, past associations, paranoia, underwear color, ect.

What crimes were being punished with secret death would have alot to do with what I outlawed. In V for Venddetta the Koran or Qur'an or however you spell it, and other religious artifacts and such were outlawed. So, if certain religons were outlawed and people were found practicing them, I'd want to have them seceretly taken care of because I wouldn't want the people to know that they were defying me in this way. Maybe reading outlawed material, which could go hand in hand with the religious thing. I guess they would be things that I didn't want the public to know were happining, if that makes sence.

Well this wouldn’t really be a crime, but if someone had some dirt on the said monarch (Example: knew about one of his sex scandals, or found out he cheated the people of their rights) then a secret death would have to be the only way to get rid of the guy with out making the monarch look bad.

Political dissent is a huge one. Look up "los desaparecidos," the dissapeared ones. It was a popular tactic for dictators in South America.

Anything that's too embarrassing to execute them publicly for.

- Stealing from the royal treasury and almost getting away with it? (And your highly trained guards, where were they? Having a cigar, were they? Wow, they must be the best of the best!)

- Cheating on a close friend/family member of the tyrant? (Like you want that announced from a guillotine. "This wench cheated on the King's brother, because she wasn't getting satisfaction! Shame on her, now we execute her!")

- Causing an accident while carrying out the evil King's orders? (He'd want to deny it was anything to do with him, no, those people burned to death through their own negligence, what do you mean my agent was there playing with fire spells, I have no agent of that description. On a completely seperate matter, my palace lions won't need to be fed this week...)

Engaging in forbidden activities is a big one. Stuff that the monarch has either outlawed, or denies exists at all (much in the same way that some Middle East nations deny the Holocaust exists, when other nations have clear proof that it did happen!)

Examples:
- praying to a "disgraced" god/dess
- worshipping a "dark" patron god of an enemy nation
- playing with demon powers and summoning them to do your evil bidding like overthrowing a kind and just government
- experimenting with any forbidden magic
- experimenting with magic at all (maybe it's forbidden except for the royal magicians)
- receiving news about foreign victories against the monarch's army in a distant land, and spreading them
- running a black market trading business to get fresh or unspoiled food to people that the monarch isn't helping
- being part of a Gunpowder Plot to destroy him directly
- belonging to a guerilla group that blows things up or uses illegal magic to destroy things he has constructed/set up, especially if the monarch is trying to have the illusion that everyone supports his rule

That's what Saddam did when he seized power. You were either for him or killed by him.

Just about anything, really. Depending on how demented the monarch you're talking about is. Let yourself have fun with this one, perhaps something as trivial as stealing one loaf of bread could result in death. There really aren't any limits other than your own imagination.
