I have a question about online blogs. First off, yes, I have been sitting under a rock ever since I left undergrad and blogging never really interested me because most of my friends tended to use it smear the names of each other. It was a great drama fest for the times I was feeling bored and didn't want to play any more video games.
So now I am seeing that everyone has a blog of some type and that it can be used for something aside from catfights. However, there are so many sites to choose from. So my question is this: in your opinion, what is the best blog site and why do you think that?

Well....
The best blog sites are the ones you feel part of the conversation. So what I think is best and what you think is best and what another person thinks is best....well, you get the idea.
I started blogging forever ago. It was when I realised I was a writer with horrible self-discipline skill. My first step in the journey to getting things done was to commit to blogging every day. And I did that. Still do for the most part, even though blogs have fallen out of fashion to be replaced by Twitter and Facebook.
And therein lies the good news. Most of the people who seemed to be using The Blog as a tool for hooking up or bitching about their ex or all the other catfighty things are now doing that sort of activity on Twitter. That means that The Blogs are once again good places for writers to express themselves on a variety of issues and converse with other writers. (You can't hang out on a blog for very long if you don't have at least some Writer in you. Everything that transpires thereon is written.)
Nashville still has the remnants of what had been one of the most vibrant blog cultures in the country, thanks to Nashville Is Talking and Brittney Gilbert (who landed nicely in San Francisco a couple years back.)
The best blogs around here tend to branch out from Post Politics and Pith In The Wind. I'm partial to Tiny Cat Pants:
http://tinycatpants.net
and of course my very own Just Another Pretty Farce:
http://mycropht.wordpress.com
and Women's Health News
http://womenshealthnews.wordpress.com
and Newscoma
http://newscoma.com
A list of author's blogs can be found at
http://www.authorsblogs.com/
and the best blog on the publishing industry (to my mind) is
http://booksquare.com
The best way to find blogs you like is to find one blog you like and bounce around from there.

So what's this thread about, exactly?

Actually I was looking for a site where you set up a blog. Back in my day *gets out her granny glasses* the huge thing was Live Journal. Anyone who wrote a blog had an LJ account. But now it seems the new shiny site is Wordpress or Blogger.
I also remember that MySpace had a blog section, but does anyone even use MySpace any more?
However, I am very grateful for the list of interesting blogs to read, because honestly I never really know how to pick one to read. I just read the ones that my friends write. It would be nice to branch out a bit and see what other folks are writing.
So reposing the question:
If you were to start a blog of your own, what site would you pick and why?

Wooops. That's what I get for not paying close enough attention.
I've run professional blogs as well as personal ones. Hands down, Wordpress is the best way to go. And you can do it for free.
Just amble over to Wordpress. com, create a blog name and login and you're on your way.

I started with blogspot but switched to wordpress in the spring when I got more serious about blogging because it seemed that wordpress offered more options for gathering statistics. You're right about usage of myspace. For now, facebook appears to be the going thing. Who knows what it will be six months from now?

I personally have a Blogger (Google, if you have a Google account then all you have to do is set up the blog and start posting) but a lot of my friends have Wordpress blogs. And, of course, my favourite online community is a Wordpress, too. :D GO MB!

Me and two friends have a wordpress blog:
www.3sharedpaths.com
We like the things you can do with wordpress, and though a bit cumbersome, you can really do some nice things with it for free.
