The Detroit NaNo Forum now has an unofficial companion web site, Detroit WriMos 2009. Point your web browsers to http://detwrimo.oxyhost.com/ to take a look!

The web site is run by your friendly MLs as a place to put useful things that don't fit easily in the forum. Right now, the web site has electronic versions of the nifty Getting Unstuck-er and Novel Planner handed out at the Kickoff Party. It's got a handy table of all write-ins in one place, as well as photos from the Kickoff Party and various write-ins.

Speaking of photos, there's room for more on the photo page. If you have a good NaNoWriMo photo taken this year, please consider submitting it for the web page. Please contact an ML if interested.

Details: There is an attended parking lot, and it's free! It's easily accessable from major freeways, or you can coast down Woodward. From I-94, use Woodward Ave/M-1 exit. From I-75, exit at Grand Blvd or Warren Ave, then west to Woodward Ave.

Z's is a great little bar/grill. When you come in, climb the stairs to the second floor, and that's where you'll find us!

I could go through everyone's profile, but I thought it would be easier to have a survey here in the forum :-)

So, what genre is everyone writing? Is your story just one genre, or could it fit in more that one?

Personally, I'm aiming for horror (think Lovecraft, not slasher), but there is/will be a fair amount of urban fantasy (think Holly Black).

Any Novels Set In Michigan?

Hey Everybody,

Just wondering if anybody is setting their novel in Detroit/Michigan. I'm writing a gothic ghost story; the haunted house in the story is a mansion in Grosse Pointe. But my characters are going to visit various places around metro Detroit. They're going to meet a mysterious person under the Russell overpass. They'll visit the DFT. I'm hoping to work in the Michigan Central building some way, but haven't figured out how yet. And I've got planned a very cool scene set in a crypt in Elmwood cemetery.

So, anybody else have a Michigan-based story?

Donating to NaNoWriMo

Dear Detroit WriMos,

As we pass the halfway mark in the NaNoWriMo contest, I'd like to take a moment to talk about supporting NaNoWriMo and its parent organization. All of us participating in this crazy marathon get something personal out of NaNoWriMo. It could be taking on the challenge, doing something completely different from normal life, trying out our creative talents or just the satisfaction of having written something at novel length. I hope your personal reward is worthwhile enough to merit a small donation to the Office of Letters and Light for your enjoyment of the event.

We tend to look at NaNoWriMo as the local faces at write-ins and personalities on the forum, with some distant HQ shipping out stickers to the regions, maybe paid for by the royalties from Chris Baty's book. Actually, NaNoWriMo is nonprofit and, like all nonprofits, always in need of funding.

The parent organization, the Office of Letters and Light, runs three events - NaNoWriMo, for 120,000+ November participants, Young Writers Program, for 25,000+ November participants, and Script Frenzy in April, for 8,500 would-be scriptwriters. Besides this, OLL runs the NaNo web site and forums year-round. All of this takes a budget of $566,000 for 2009. OLL makes some money from t-shirts and other merchandise, and has donations from big sponsors, but by far the greatest part of its income comes from small donations by the WriMos themselves. That is, from people like you and me.

There are several ways to donate:

Direct Donations: WriMos can donate online using Visa, MasterCard or PayPal. A donation of $10 or more gets you a nifty golden halo on your profile page.

Matching Gifts: Many large employers will match employees' donations. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, OLL is eligible to receive matching gifts. Contact your HR manager to find out more.

Buying Stuff: Every time someone buys merchandise from the web site, OLL receives a few dollars from the profits.

Donating When Broke: NaNoWriMo has set up arrangements with the search engine GoodSearch to receive a tiny donation for each use by a WriMo. Also, online shoppers using GoodSearch and eBay can arrange to have a small part of the price turned into a donation. Full details are here.

Every little bit helps the Office of Letters and Light keep bringing us our crazy Novembers. So think about contributing!

Since I'm not writing this year I have some more time to read what everyone is doing. If you're posting to a blog, or writing group I would love a chance to see the process go and provide whatever encouragement you need/want/can handle. I know that for me last year it was having one or two friends reading along daily that kept me going and feeling that need to write more so that they could see where the story went.

Not that everyone will want this or feel their writing is up for public consumption. But think of me as the self-designated cheer leader, that guy that hands you the water, then hops a car to further down the marathon to hand you another.

Write-in for the Redford/Livonia/Westland area?

The last few years a group of us have been getting together on Sunday nights to do a write-in at Malarkey's in Westland. Unfortunately, I think most of the people who had been coming to that one are now part of the Ann Arbor region and won't be coming any longer.

So, is there interest from people in the area to continue with this write-in, or would another location/time/day serve better? The food at Malarkey's is great, but the Sunday night movie can be a bit distracting sometime! (Tropic Thunder, Superbad, The Love Guru...) I'm open to changing when/where we meet, depending on other people's availability/location, so go ahead and discuss!

Well, if three times makes a tradition, I think that makes Z's Villa the traditional Detroit write-in spot. The place is on Piquette just off of Woodward, and it's pretty awesome. A more detailed post will be made about it when we've got this year's details hammered out.

Speaking of which, Thursdays? It's been on Thursdays in years previous and that remains the best day for me. What about you guys?

"Battle of Midway" Writeathon Invitiation from the Tri-Cities Region

Hi there, Detroit Wrimos!

I'm one of the MLs from the Michigan::Tri-Cities region, and we'd like to invite you to an all-day writeathon this Saturday, November 14, in Pinconning. Yep, it *is* a bit of a hike, but we wanted to extend the offer in case any of the students among you are actually from our area and might be home that weekend and want to join us. Also, some regions we've invited are talking about carpooling up, so we're hoping to see as many Michigan regions represented as possible. A little healthy competition never hurt anyone's word counts, right? :)

We have the Thompson Room of the Third Street Station Deli (305 S. Mable [M-13], Pinconning, just north of Pinconning Rd.; http://www.3rdstreetstation.com) reserved all day on November 14, so we'll be camped out from 9 am to 9 pm. One of our Wrimos was able to get the awesome owners to waive the room rental and catering fees! The only catch? Everyone who attends needs to buy some food and drink. We can do that, right? There will also be a meat and cheese tray and nibbler tray provided to help get us through the 12-hour ordea--uh, creative endeavor. *g*

Not to mention, there will be prizes, including some awesome gift cards!

I have never known enough about my novel this early on to create much of a synopsis, but this time is different, for some reason. I think deciding that my genre will be at least somewhat Horror/Thriller has helped me immensely in seeing where I'm headed.
