I know last year we met at Beaner's off of University. Are we still going to do so this year? That would be very convenient for me because I work next door at Jimmy John's! I hope you all can make it again this year. My husband will be joining us too!
If you can relate to this (no matter what age) you belong with us!

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU VISIT DETROIT

1. First, you must learn to pronounce the city name. It's Deh-troit. NOT
DEE-troit. If you pronounce it DEE-Troit then we will assume you are
from Toledo and here for the country Music hoe-down.

2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Detroit has its own
version of traffic rules... Hold on and pray (I recommend praying 1st)!

3. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 am to 10:00 am. The evening rush
hour is from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday
morning. Weekends are open game.

4. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended,
cussed out and possibly shot. If you're first off the starting line
when the light turns green, count to five before going across the
intersection.
This wil l avoid getting in the way of cross-traffic who just ran their
yellow light to keep from getting rear-ended or shot.

5. Schoenherr can ONLY be properly pronounced by a native of the
Detroit metro area. That goes for Gratiot too.

6. Construction and renovation on I-94, I-96, I-75, I-275, I-375, The
Lodge and The Southfield Freeways are a way of life and forever. Just
deal with it.

7. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a
factory defect or they are "out-of-towners".

8.. All old men (or women) with white hair wearing a hat have total
right-of-way.

9. The minimum acceptable speed on I-696 and I-275 is 85 regardless of
the posted speeds. Anything less is considered downright SISSY. Oh, and
don't even think of allowing more than one car length between cars!

10. That attractive wrought iron on the windows and doors in Detroit is
NOT ornamental. DO NOT get out of your car to take pictures.

11. Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that
reads "Keep honking, I'm reloading". He or she probably is.

12. If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 in a 60 mph zone,
people are not waving because they are so friendly in Detroit. I would
suggest you duck.

13. I-275 and I-696 is our daily version of NASCAR.

14. It's not M-10, it's "the Lodge".

15. That's not a lake, it's a pothole.

16. If someone tells you it's on Outer Drive, you better hope you have
a map.

17. The Michigan left turn is simple. If you want to turn left, go a
1/4 of a mile past your turn, get to the left, then make a left, then
make another left, then make a right when you get back to the
intersection where you wanted to turn left in the first place. NOW you
have gone left.

18. And those 2 really ugly arches over Telegraph on I94???? DON'T EVEN
ASK!! WE DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!!!!

WELCOME , ENJOY YOUR STAY, BUT AVOID EYE-CONTACT WITH THE LOCALS

----------

Author sightings?

So, has anyone talked to a published author lately? I went to Borders today for Mitch Albom's "For One More Day" book signing. He was very personable and easy going, and when I told him that I was working on a novel, he was very encouraging and supportive. What a high to meet a published author!
TGIO!: Thank God its Over Party

Come and celebrate your genius and perseverance!
Tell us your worries, woes and how you got through them to join us here!

Sunday December 2nd
4:00 p.m.
Woody's Diner
208 5th Ave
Royal Oak, MI 48067-3813
Phone: (248) 543-6911
We shall be upstairs!

Directions to Woody's - I-696 to M-1 Woodward Ave. From the exit, follow the signs to Woodward. Just north of the freeway service drive, turn right onto Washington Ave (small Amtrak sign, townhouses ahead on the right). Take Washington north about 1/2 mile. Fifth street is opposite a brand-new 15-story building. Parking is free on Sunday so should not be a problem. Woody's is in the short block before the railroad tracks.
Here is a link to a map of downtown Royal Oak: http://www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us/media/parking.html
Main St. also works as an approach. However, Fifth Street does not cross the railroad tracks. So, if taking Main St. north from I-696, as soon as you cross the railroad tracks, turn left and cross the tracks again, then go one block west and one block north.

Cheers
Writing in Downtown Royal Oak

Livonia, Week before Thanksgiving

Hi all!

I live north of Midland, but I am heading down to the Detroit area for the Lions game next Sunday. Since I'll be in Livonia for Thanksgiving a few days later, I've just decided to stay at my parents' house from Sunday until Thursday. Any chance of anyone meeting up for a write-in on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of that week (19th-21st)? I like the Panera at Six Mile and Farmington, but I am flexible. I prefer free wifi, especially since my parents have very slow dial-up and an ancient computer, which just Will Not Do. :)

If anyone is interested, please let me know!
When life gets in the way

So, It is now the 11th and I am FINALLY able to get time to sit down and actually start typing. I have several notebooks with small stories and ideas that I've had, but none of it compiled or in any special order. I am pretty sure that this post here has more words in it than what I have on MS Word right now (a check says this is true).

So, with only 20 or so days to go, any way to plow through this while working 6 days a week?
Tuesday 11/13 in Livonia

Hi, all:

I'll be writing tonight at The Stables (bar and food) in Livonia from 6:00-8:00-ish. It's located on the east side of Middlebelt, just south of 5 Mile. It's a dark bar, sometimes smoky (but I hope not), with burgers.

Anyway, just an FYI. I usually have the corner booth, and am pretty sure I'll be the only person with a laptop going. ;)

Best,
Farmington-Farmington Hills Area Write In?

Is anyone in the Farmington-Farmington Hills area interested in a write in on Sunday the 11th at about 4:00pm? I'm new to NaNoWriMo this year and I'd really like to meet up with some other writers. I figure we can meet up at the Panera Bread at 34635 Grand River Ave, Farmington, MI 48335. It's supposed to be a Wi-Fi hotspot too. Anyone interested?
Downriver Wrimos

I'm wondering if those folks who are downriver would like to set up a carpooling system to get us up to the Ferndale/Royal Oak gathering. I'd say we should have our own closer to home- but I believe official nanowrimo get togethers are supposed to be coordinated by a nanowrimo alumni, which I am not, lol.
Anyone Near Mt. Clemens?

Hey everyone!

Getting pretty excited about this years NaNo, even though November crept up on me this year, and I don't have anything figured out yet.

I've recently moved to Mt. Clemens, which is a really up and coming place! It used to be a bit of a hole, but they began a renaissance of sorts about 10 years ago, and it's becoming very, very cool...sort of like Royal Oak was before it became so congested that a person can't round a corner without banging into another high rise under construction! (Royal Oak's my hometown, and I love it dearly. It's just a little freaky watching its transformation.)

Sorry, I digressed...

I return now to my initial query: Is anyone near Mt. Clemens? If so, I'd love to hear from you and possibly schedule some local write-ins in this area. It's always good to have easily accessible support and encouragement, so let me know if anyone's interested!

Namaste,
First Lines

Okay, what was the very first sentence you wrote for this year's novel? Give the forum that first burst of inspiration, the words that changed the blank screen into a work in progress, the glorious turn of phrase that will win you either the Man Booker or Bulwer-Lytton prize, or maybe both. It doesn't have to be the first sentence of the story as long as it was the first thing you wrote down. I propose a simple format:

    Novel title or genre
First sentence

No frills, just raw noveling!
Detroit Plots......

So what is everyone planning on writing...

Genre: Fantasy/Modern Fairy Tale

Working Title: Enchanted Beauty in the Suburbs

Blurb:

leeping Beauty is real.. and in todays world she's still sleeping

Four fairies have been set to guard Sleeping Beauty and her castle, hiding it from the evil fairy and to find the 'prince.' The prince has been reborn several times throughout history and has failed due to the evil fairy's meddling. The 'prince' is now found amongst a group of three, two boys and a girl. They aren't sure which (and it can be the girl, i haven't decided) is destined to be Sleeping Beauty's true love with the power to wake her up and defeat the evil fairy's spell. They've hidden the palace in the perfect place, a rich district in the suburbs of an American suburb.

Once Sleeping Beauty is awaken, the three are cursed to forget which of them did it. And all will fade unless the matter is resolved.

And can Sleeping Beauty fit into todays world??

BTW you know other people can start threads... I'm just a nobody too..
