New England WORD WAR 2007 - Write people, write!!! (Rules & Word count reporting)

Hail all NH Word Warriors!!! Yes, its that time of the year again, the lines have been drawn, the trashtalking between state MLs has begun, and we are in a war with Vermont, Maine, and Conneticut. So, my beloved Novelists - Get those word counts crankin!

RULES:
The rules are simple. If you want to participate in the New England Word War, and have the 50,000 word goal, all you have to do is to respond in this thread by Nov 7, saying that you are participating as a word warrior, and post your word counts in your profiles. The word counts must be posted to your profiles for me to see them, since when you update your profile it updates all the posts you have made, including your enlistment post to this thread. Please do not respond to the reminder email if you want your words to count. I do not regularly check that email, and so will miss your hard earned contributions to NH's word war effort.

Then there will be four counting days: Nov 10, 17, 24, and 30.

I will do my best to send out an email to everyone to let you all know when the "counting day deadlines" are approaching. The word counts have to be in before the deadline to be counted for that particular "battle".

I'll keep you all posted on our standings in the War.

Write, Wrimos, Write!!! Go Team!!!

Your Beloved General, ...er... ML,
Tia Marie

PS: if you are receiving emails that you don't think you should be getting, please recheck your settings in your nanomail section. thx!

****UPDATES****
***MANCHESTER AREA EVENTS*** Kick Off - Write-In's - and TGIO info. EVERYONE WELCOME!

Hi Everyone!

This thread is about Manchester area event information. Wrimo's from all areas are welcome to attend!

When I receive NaNoWriMo Swag I will hand it out during these events. This year's swag mostly consists of stickers of some kind, I haven't seen them yet. If I come up with something interesting to include as woohoo prizes, I'll let you know!

Informal Kick Off - Sunday 10/28 - Manchester Barnes & Noble on So. Willow st. 2-3pm - I know it is the same day as this posting, but I noticed that nothing was planned for this weekend in the Manchester area. I will try to have some goodies for those who attend! I'll be wearing a blue "I write books" pin from past year's Nano

Belated Kick Off/Write In - on Sunday 11/4 - This happened at Panera on S. Willow street and we had a great turn out! I took a couple of pictures and when I figure out where to post them so people can see, I'll let you know!

Write-In's: I hope to host 2 each week, probably on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8pm. I am looking at alternating between B&N and Panera Bread - both on So. Willow in Manch. The Starbucks is opening this friday, so perhaps we can have a write in there on the Monday after they open. I'll update this message when I find out.

11/5 - Write-In B&N S. Willow st 6-8pm. I will be there with my little ole sign out.

11/7 - Write-In Panera Bread - S. Willow St. - 6-8pm - This is also the deadline to throw your name into the ring for the WordWar.

11/12 - Write-In Starbucks, S.Willow St. 6-8pm - drink coffee - write novel - Plenty of outlets for power and welcoming staff!

11/14- Wednesday - Write-In Starbucks, S.Willow St. 6-8pm - drink coffee - write novel - Plenty of outlets for power and welcoming staff! Yummy coffee makes you go Vroooom!!!!

11/19- Monday - Write-In Starbucks, S.Willow St. 6-8pm - drink coffee - write novel - Plenty of outlets for power and welcoming staff! Yummy coffee makes you go Vroooom!!!!

TGIO Party: During November I will try to set up a poll to choose when and where we will have the TGIO party. My suggestion is for December 1st or 2nd in the afternoon. We have time to plan this.

Keep checking back to this thread for updates!

Getting excited about this year

I know it is a little bit early to be excited this year, but I just starting a M.F.A. Creative Writing program and I am super psyched about using the nanowrimo energy to jump start my thesis. I cannot wait to start meeting in a steady writing group with my peers again. Last year was alot of fun and a huge success. Anyone wanting to get a jump start on a weekly writing meeting please contact me.

just wondering if anyone's still hanging around this forum...

i'm just curious as to how many of you are still writing (i.e. started something new, editing a nano project etc.)
i kinda finished editing my 2004 nano and i'm procrastinating on having to edit the rest of my semi-finished nano projects t. (especially '07. about all i've done with that is delete the first 10k or so because it had nothing to do with the rest of the plot)
i'm finding myself very unmotivated to write anything lately... grrr.

Seacoast Area Writers

Psssst.....hey........you.........

Yeah, hi. Listen, do any of you write all the time? Or want to turn your NaNo into something....bigger? Or smaller, or cleaner, with a few less rough edges?

Because, see, here's the thing.

I want you to come to my house once or twice a month and drink coffee, soda, whatever, and write. And relate. And give honest feedback to each other. And learn some new tricks. And share some old ones. and I have free wi-fi!

I'm really, really into this idea of getting together a group of dedicated writers for a year long writing group/workshop. I see a summer trip to the home of a famous writer, or a weekend writing retreat in the spring, manageable monthly word count goals, cool prizes for those who meet it, and best of all, the continuous flow of creative energy.

If any of this sounds good to you, PLEASE let me know!
Big, Fun, Scary Martial Arts Question

I made one of my big, fun, scary goals to get a yellow belt in a martial art. I wasn't specific as to which martial art, as I have yet to pick a dojo.

Does anyone out there have any recommendations? Martial art style? Particular school? I was eyeing Tokyo Joe's and Chung's Tae Kwon Do in Nashua. Has anyone heard good or bad things about them?

When I call around and ask questions like lesson times and cost, are there other things I should be asking to help me pick the best school?

Thanks for any help, guys!
"TGIO" Thursday December 6th, LUI LUI, Nashua 6:00 to 8:00PM

Hey!

With the Christmas season fast approaching there are few places that won't be crowded in the evenings or booked up on the weekends. We've been in luck though and have been able to reserve the private room downstairs at LUI LUI for our TGIO celebration. A private room will give us license to be noisey and have a some fun!

The cost per person will be $13.99 which will include "unlimited homemade baked rolls and Lui's famous dippin' oil, pitchers of fountain soda & brewed iced tea, platters of homemade Caesar and House Insalata, and assorted brick oven baked pizzas. This price includes service and tip. The quote was based on a minimum of 20 people, so I will need a count of heads as soon as possible. It's a pretty good deal!

In order to get things ready I'll also need some information from people who will be attending! Like, what is your final word count? (as of Nov. 30th) What is your genre? Did you use any challenges? If so, which ones? I'm sure I'll need more information at some point, but mostly I need to know who will be attending.

Please respond a.s.a.p!

TGIO "Thank Goodness It's Over" Lui Lui, Nashua, Thursday Dec. 6, 6:00 to 8:00PM. We will actually have the place until closing if we want it as they won't book the room again after 8:00.
Favorite lines and how you closed.

I was curious to see how others closed their stories and what some of the funniest, most touching or favorite lines where.

My main character is a guy who is un anchored in realities and keeps unpredictably shifting through them. He calls it side stepping. (note this isn't my story that is visible as my excerpt that is the one I set aside on thanksgiving to start this one)

as for the lines I still chuckle about when I remember them.

My opponent was trying a classic distraction tactic of looking behind me with wide eyes and about to yell something when I was tackled from behind and tumbled to the ground. When I got back up I was relieved to see. No that’s exactly what I meant to say I had two darts and I had been ready to throw one. I was just happy to have both eyes.

AND

I looked over at Romany who had apparently been the tackler to my tacklee. And against all odds had apparently hitched a ride. And she was dressed like a commando in muted colors if still with a distinctive gypsy flare. She had a small pack that was nearly invisible on her back and a knife in her hand.

“Dear Gods, Romany tell me you didn’t tackle me with that thing in your hand. It’s bad enough that you did it while I was aiming darts.”

I finished my story with:

We were off on another trip to the side.
----------

"TGIO" Party LUI LUI, Nashua, December 6th, 6:00 to 8:00

-

CONGRATULATIONS ALL!

We've come pretty close to the 20 required, "close enough for government work" as they say. Even though I requested that people let me know earlier, now that enough of us have signed on that the pressure's off, I'd like to check and see if there's anyone else who would like to join us.

I see that the Manchester area TGIO has been canceled. It is hard to find a time and date that everyone can make, and I am unbelievably impressed by and thankful to all the people who have said they'll be able to come. I'm psyched!

If anyone from over there is willing to make the drive, Tia that goes for you and Mella.bee too, then please join us! We'd love to have you and there's plenty of room. Please just let me know a.s.a.p. so I can prepare what needs to be prepared. Once again, the details are:

December 6th
Lui Lui in Nashua. (Very easy to get to...Pretty much across the street from the Pheasant Lane Mall or in that general area on the Daniel Webster Highway)
6:00 to 8:00 The manager says we can have the room until closing tat 9:00.
Cost is $13.99 per person, which includes various kinds of Pizza, drinks, fresh baked bread, Salads. Gratuities are included in the price. I'm doing this from memory... but I think that's everything.
Oh, We're having a cake for dessert.

It will be a nice way to end the month. A lot of good people!

Think it over and let me know if you can make it!

With High Hopes!

Just had to say thanks to the three others who showed up at Master McGraths tonight..... You're critique of my novel (what I showed you) really helped me. I've made a couple notes to add some more information in, but otherwise won't be changing the parts I showed you.
Anyway, had a fun time!

So how many of us toasted our success with alcoholic libations after winning the Purple?

I know I did - I spent the evening with my kids, piled on the couch, nicely buzzed on a Chardonay and watched Back to the Future. It was heaven!

Concord Border TGIO

I'm letting peopel know that I'd like to have a TGIO get together at the concord borders Cafe. Saturday the first and sunday the second so that People who couldn't make one can make the other. Or you can all vote for which works best for you.

Baring my illness flareing up, something major happening or the weather getting evil I'm going to spend some time there both nights. I'll put out one of the Nano writer at work printouts and be sitting in the cafe.

Join me. It sounds like a lot of you are in the nashua area or farther up north I figured somebody aught to at least offer to get together with others in the Capital of the state.

what's the plan for this. I'm game for manch or Conc. I can't do Mon-wed and the 8-12 is out but saturday and sunday (the first and second) work as do the tursday and friday right after them. I might be able to swing an early eighth but I have to spend all sunday prepping for an outpatient procedure and and that means no late night for me.

Ok I've seen a couple of other people out there with some wordcounts nearly as crazy as mine, so I thought I'd start thread where we can say "I did it!" as we individually make it to the finish line and people can ask "How did you do that?!?!" I've already had one person questioning my...ah...coffee intake, but unfortunately I don't drink coffee.

:-) Come on, guys, we're rooting for you! Yes, all of you! You can make it to the 50k mark!

The "How did THAT happen?" thread.

Past years participants know what I'm talking about. You stop and realize one of your characters did something you really didn't see coming, a major plot thread completely unwound or went spinning out of control or you went off on a tangent with a secondary character that you you now find ridiculously more fascinating than your alleged primary character. Post 'em here, share your surprises.

My main character, in a flashback to her childhood no less, just gutted her pet Lop in her bedroom with a pair of children's scissors.

And it's not a horror novel by any stretch of the imagination. At least it wasn't.

Anybody noticed fluke in NH word output?

If you go to your View Profile section, and go to Nano Stats, you've got pretty bar graphics. One is for New Hampshire. Interesting writing surge on the 26th. That was Monday... Any theories? There's another surge in the Fantasy genre word output, on the 5th which was also a Monday, however in that case Sunday showed no headway at all so I'm guessing that was a data-gathering error. The NH-26 surge shows acceptable progress on the preceeding day....
