TGIO Details: Saturday December 1, 4-6pm

The TGIO event will be Saturday 1 December from 4-6pm at Chance of Rain Cafe, 1522 SE 32nd Avenue, which is half a block south of Hawthorne Blvd.

map for Chance of Rain

This is on the #14 bus and less than 10 blocks from the #75, #15, and #4. There is also free street parking. They serve coffee, tea, a light menu, and beer and wine. If you don't want to buy anything, that's OK too.

Around 5pm, we'll start the reading: everyone is welcome to share a short section of their novel. Aim for about 500 - 800 words, which is what you can read aloud in about 5 minutes.

All WriMos (whether or not you've won) and friends are invited.

Welcome Portland NaNoWriMos!

Hi everybody -- welcome to the 2007 edition of NaNoWriMo! I'll be the ML again this year. Unfortunately, co-ML Audrey has moved back to Austin, TX. We can say goodbye by making sure our regional word count is MUCH higher than theirs!

EDITED TO ADD: I'm happy to say we've got a second ML, Wairoam, on board. And anyone intrigued by NaNoWriMo's spin-off event, Script Frenzy, can contact Script Frenzy ML Gostiee (who is also organizing our Halloween Midnight write-in at the Fireside).

Our informational/pep-rally/kick-off event will be 3-5pm, Saturday 27 October, at the Central Library downtown (same place it's been the past few years). More on that in the next week or so.

It's also not too early to think about a venue for the TGIO -- Thank G-word-of-your-choice It's Over -- party. We need a place that can accommodate a large group (based on previous years, at least 50 and possibly over 100) that's somewhat centrally located and ideally free (or extremely cheap). If there are any party planners among us who would like to volunteer to organize this event, please let me know.

If you haven't started already, it's time to clear your November calendar, lay in provisions for long hours at the keyboard or notebook, and begin your pre-novel rituals of preparation! It's going to be a great month!

Heather
Book Club for Writers???

Anyone interested in putting together a book club for writers? I belong to a book group, but want to critique writing and format and flow instead of the usual stuff (character flaws, the story, blah, blah, blah).

I write suspense, horror, thriller, but would love to read any book in any genre for form and function. I figure it all helps me write better, eh?

Just finished _The Five People You Meet in Heaven_ and am working on _The Best American Short Stories_ edited by Stephen King. I am also reading _Flash_ a collection of Flash Fiction. I finished _Shredderman_ by Wendelin Van Draanen (midgrade book) and _Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief_ by the same author (also midgrade).

I'll read practically anything.

Whatcha think? Any takers?

THE DARES BOARD!!! Post any dares you have here!!

So let's say it's November 11th, and you're staring at a computer screen. There's a lot you've already written, but you still have so much to go.... your eyelids droop... your back slouches against the chair... you yawn...

But then you remember the hilarious dare your best friend sent you about the eggbeater and a walrus, and you decide that you HAVE to put it in your novel!! ZING! You're wide awake and typing again, your writers block forgotten.

If you've got any good dares, regardless of the amount, please post them!!! Make them up or get them off a webbie, but post them so all Portlanders can use them!! Don't worry what they're about, just post!! (My best friend and I had an email going with NaNo dares: I'll post the good ones here.)
"Shut Up and Write" Sunday, Oct. 28

I wanted to extend an invitation to all my fellow WriMos for a fun writing opportunity to kick off the Month:

"Shut Up and Write" is a monthly write-in, the last Sunday of every month, at A Chance of Rain cafe in SE Portland.

"Shut Up" is co-hosted by Subatomic Books publishing and the Portland Literary Offensive. It's just some un-structured writing time (or plotting, character-interviewing time, etc.) hosted each month by a local Portland writer. (October features local author Mykle Hansen, author of Help! A Bear is Eating Me!)

"Shut Up and Write" starts at 7:30 at A Chance of Rain cafe: 1522 SE 32nd Ave., just off Hawthorne. For more details, visit: http://www.shutupandwrite.org.

"Shut Up" will be a great opportunity for writers to come together in preparation for NaNo. Hope to see you there!

Wishing everyone a great, productive NaNo 2007!

Thinking to NaNo 2008

Congratulations on all that finished their 50,000 words in NaNoWriMo 2007! Give yourselves a big pat on the back for achieving such a grand milestone!

And for all of you that didn't make your 50,000 words, also give yourselves a big pat on the back for the effort. It is a difficult task to achieve. Let's try it again next year!

With that said, I wanted to make a forum thread to basically covered lessons learned. Your neighborhood ML's would love to hear what you liked about this year, and what you think we could do next year to make it even better! Now is your time to voice your opinion. What did we do right? What could we have done better? We would love all of your thoughts on how we make NaNo 2008 an even better experience for all!

So, give us your thoughts and opinions. You can post them right here on the thread to see what others think as well. Or, if you would prefer to remain anonymous, you can send either myself or hhw a NaNoMail or e-mail us at portland_or@nanowrimo.org.

Nothing will be taken personally and we welcome all of your thoughts and ideas on how we can improve and make next year the best NaNoWriMo ever!
Gresham/East Side Write Ins

Hey guys, I live in Gresham now, and I'm curious when and where people on the east side of I-205 plan on writing next month. I'm looking for word sprint partners early!

I'm also frustrated the forums are taking forever, though I'm happy they're ironing out the problems now, rather than November 1st, when we're all trying to post our word counts.
Plan-Ins in 2008?

It was so nice to finally meet some wrimos at the fireside. There were four of us there. I guess I need to make myself more noticeable, wear flashing lights on my hat or something. I do think this was a good nano month. And we are just a few months from script frenzy too!!!!

I was thinking that it might be fun if next October we have Plan-ins. The way I see it, we can have different sites on different days at different times, like we do with write-ins, but this would be to get to know each other a bit better. This can lead up to our fun meeting at the library but since we will be smaller groups initially, we will be able to get to know each other a bit better.

Opinions? How do others feel about such a thing? It would kinda be like having a writers' group that will be writing novels at the same time.

We hope that many of you can make it (we know it's kind of last minute) but here are the current details. If you're interested in attending, just RSVP to this thread so we kind of have an idea of who might be coming. We hope that people from every region can make it so we can show just how awesome Oregon is!

When: Saturday, November 24th

Where: Round Table Pizza, 55th and Main, Springfield

Time: 1:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Come meet Wrimos from all over Oregon at this awesome and first time (and hopefully annual) event! We'll be having writing workshops, games, prizes, and more.

We hope to see you there. Keep writing!
Post When You're Done

You know you wanna brag. Go ahead!

I'd brag, but I just celebrated with a bunch of beer and I can't think. I'm GLAD I'm done, because I just found out this afternoon that my family's Thanksgiving will be at my place. Yikes! I plan on finishing up over the next couple weeks, but no strain anymore. Now I get to stress about turkey. Ugh!

More beer!!!
Final Fireside Write-in

I really hope to see nanoers at the fireside. I've had so little company that I feel ignored, sad, abused, what-have-you. Yes, I've reached 50k but my novel isn't nearly finished and I plan to work on it friday. Might even add some words! So, final fireside write-in Friday 11/30 7pm to 9pm. We started things off great at the Fireside so we might as well end it great!!

Sum up your NaNo Novel in Two Sentences

This is always a hoot. I'll start:

Fortune gets punched out by her rockstar (he wishes) boyfriend the same day she finds out she's inherited a beach cabin in a logging town at the southern tip of the Puget Sound. She packs up and says hasta to Portland and discovers her great aunt Millie was a bit witchy when Fortune accidentally casts a spell binding a Elf King to her side. Hilarity ensues.

So, if everyone writes 245 more words, then we'll be in 7th place for highest wordcount.

I just did the math... I thought that it might be somewhat screwy, but if everyone who has AFFILATED with Portland updates their word count by 245 more words, we'd be in 7th place for wordcount.
I'm now ahead of my own game

Last year I had to do 11,500 on my final day... this year I finally made it to that point tonight... with a few days left... I'll do some serious story butt-kicking tomorrow. I'll leave a few to work on Thursday and Friday nights...

maybe.

I told myself last year that i would never do 11500 in one day again... I'm going to hold to that... so maybe I'll do 10500 tomorrow... no... I like what little i have left of my sanity... and yes, for the record, I have tomorrow off. I always do. My fixed days off are Tuesday and Wednesday... but I had some errands to take care of today... so I only got 2500 today... with one exception (groceries, in the morning) I will be staying home tomorrow.

I'll get most of it knocked out tomorrow...

but I'm still a bit iffy on the whole 'battle with the ugly bad guys' that my characters are threatening me with. I'd much prefer a calmer ending... I'm not big on battles... I'm a peace-loving kind of gal.

the saga continues... what? no, the elves cannot come along to the grocery store, dangit. stay home. I get enough funny looks as it is...

I'm not so sure about having any sanity left... I think it left after last years' NaNo and hasn't returned... it's afraid of what I do here...

Amanda
Kermit: What makes you think the show needs a script?
Fozzie: Oh, come on Kermit! Every show has a script! Yea

Final Weekend Write-in PUSH

The Thanksgiving write in did much in pushing me further along but I'm still far behind where I should be, so I'm going to extend the time of the Friday Fireside Write in to last until dawn. Anyone who would like to join me is very welcome. I plan to catch a bus home again sometime around 7am or so, maybe later. I've been rather lonely at write ins this year and hope to have at leaswt a little company. I really enjoyed talking with Amanda during the thankisgiving write in at Coffee Time. Who else would like to complain about word count with me???

Hi, I'm a student currently enrolled at Portland Community College, and I was wondering if there are any other writers here who are interested in a write in. If so I'd love to get together, and it doesn't have to be a formal write in, we could just to talk about our novels or whatever. So, is there anyone there, or here?

Thanksgiving Write-in?

Last year some folks gathered for a write-in at the World Cup cafe inside Powell's downtown on Thanksgiving. This year, it will be open from 10am - 6pm. Is there any interest in meeting there this year? If you think you would probably attend, what time would you prefer?
